Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Thermos Nissan 18-Ounce Stainless-Steel Insulated Travel TumblerCustomer Review: LEAKS Summary: 1 Stars
I just received this tumbler in record time!! but was so bummed when I tested it. I drink tea with sugar, and get up and I am out the door each morning in a very short amount of time. I heat the water, throw in the sugar cubes and a tea bag, and walk out the door. I mix the sugar in by tipping the tumbler upside down a few times. My Trudeau tumbler would drip tea out, and I was looking for a tumbler that did not spill. I went to Nissan because I have other products from them and trusted them.
In my mind there are only two things a tumbler has to do. Keep my tea hot, and not leak. If it fails on either of these two points the tumbler is worthless to me. I put water in the tumbler and turned it upside down... All 18 oz. of water drained out in 1:30 seconds!!! Needless to say, with the water went $18.52 and $7.94 in shipping!!!
I have sent an email to Thermos/Nissan and it will be interesting to see what they say, but in my book you just dont make a "spill resistant" tumbler. I saw that Nissan makes a "Leak Proof" travel mug which I just find amazing. Do want the tires on your care to hold air or kind of hold air...
Customer Review: After several months of use, upgraded to 5-stars Summary: 4 Stars
I've had one of these for several months now and I was silently happy with it but, only when someone gave me an Oxo Good Grips LiquiSeal Travel Mug I came to realize what a good product the Thermos really is. It's not perfect, of course and, here are the positives/negatives, as far as I can name them:
+ fits well in most car cup holders
+ top screws tightly, no spills there
+ good insulation, keeps coffee warm for my hour-long commutes
+ relatively easy to clean (had-wash only, no dishwaher)
+ the hinged, flip top close/open lid seems to be the ideal solution
- after several months of daily use, the middle rubber grip (see picture) is no longer tight and it can fall down
This is a great coffee mug for the car, highly recommended, probably the best there is. I am rounding up the 4.5 stars to 5 because the rubber grip, while loose, hasn't completely fallen off and, as I am writing this review (and sipping coffee) it's still in place (it needs slight readjustments, usually after cleaning).
Customer Review: Graceful and Larger Capacity, but NOT Leak-Resistant Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this tumbler at the same time I purchased the Thermos Nissan Leak-Proof Travel Mug, and used them simultaneously to test them both out. Here's what I found regarding this item: you cannot drink from this cup without the lid on: the threads are on the outside of the cup, so the lip is very uncomfortable without the lid screwed on. With the lid on, however, the flip top periodically hit my nose, and the sip hole is very small. Also, this tumbler leaks significantly when tilted to the side, even with the flip top closed: the liquid leaks through the hinges. The tumbler has a beautiful, tapered shape, but it's so tall it feels a little unstable if not settled into a car's cup holder. The rubber grip mid-way up is a nice touch. As is true for all Thermos-Nissan products, the tumbler holds temperature extremely well, and if you prefer a tumbler-style travel cup or want one that holds more liquid, this is a good choice. Since purchasing this and the mug, I have consistently chosen to drink from the mug, primarily for the comfort of its contoured lip and the ability to drink from it regardless of whether the lid is on or not.
Customer Review: Is this worth the money? A resounding YES! Summary: 5 Stars
I'm a veterinary student, and have tried tons of different coffee tumblers. My biggest complaint with all of them is that they can't keep the coffee hot longer than an hour. And over time, the flavored creamer makes them have a funny taste that just won't come out. And I never liked how little they held. Maybe I drink more coffee than the average person, but 16 ounces doesn't seem to cut it.
Then I found this beautiful tumbler. The first day I tried it, I put coffee in it at 6:30, and at 11:00 it was still hot!! It stays hot until the very last sip. The lip is big enough that it slightly cools the coffee on the way to your lips if you blow on it. That's my biggest problem now - I burn my lips! But if that's the biggest problem, then there is no problem, because that's what it's meant to do.
I highly recommend this tumbler. It's expensive, but worth every cent. And it holds a generous 18 ounces, which is very nice. One thing of note - make sure you rinse it with hot water before putting your coffee in - makes a big difference in temperature. Also, it's not dishwasher safe but super easy to clean.
Customer Review: Keeps drinks warm for hours! Summary: 5 Stars
I once burnt my tongue on hot tea 2 1/2 hours after putting it in this travel mug. I think that just about says it all. :)
My only complaint is that it's not spill-proof, but it doesn't claim to be.
People have posted reviews complaining about stuff getting stuck between the walls of the mug and becoming gross or producing an odor. I had this problem very briefly when I first got it eight months ago. Then, I read the directions for care that came with it and realized it was my own stupid fault for not following directions. You have to let it sit upside-down after washing. There is a small hole in the bottom that allows moisture to evaporate from between the layers. If you don't put it upside down, the hole is covered, and there is no way for moisture to escape. When mine started getting the funky smell, I just soaked it in some warm, soapy water for a while and then left it to sit upside town for a few days to make sure there was none left trapped inside. (I knew it was completely dried out when I could no longer hear water sloshing around in there.) It's been fine ever since.
