Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Thermos Nissan 18-Ounce Stainless-Steel Insulated Travel TumblerCustomer Review: Great Tumbler Summary: 5 Stars
I, like many college kids, cannot survive without caffeine of some sort. This tumbler does a great job of insuring that I have hot coffee until I'm done drinking it. Everybody else has commented on its great insulation abilities, but I'd like to add my own experience. I like to have my coffee slightly hot, but not tongue-burning hot. So I always add a couple of ice cubes. Well, I got my coffee to the perfect temperature at 7:30 this morning and headed off to class. I sipped on it all during class and work, and the temperature stayed perfect. When I finished my coffee at 12:30 this afternoon, it was STILL the perfect temperature. Absolutely fabulous. As for the other features: The outside of the tumbler stays cool to the touch, and the rubber bottom keeps it from slipping around. However, because of it's design, it could tip over if you knock against it. So don't plan on putting this on your dashboard or floorboard of your car or anything like that. It is the perfect width at the bottom to fit into most cupholders. The rubber around the middle of the tumblers makes for an easy non-slip grip, and the top screws on easily and tightly. My only complaint is that the snap top for the sipper hole does not "snap." It just kind of closes, but it isn't securely closed. So, don't go putting it in a briefcase or backpack, because it is likely to leak onto your stuff. I havent actually tried this, though (and I don't plan to), so I could be wrong. Although it isn't spill proof if you hold it upside down or on its side, it is spill proof while you drink. THe rim of the lid is much higher than the base of the lid, so it prevents coffee from spilling all over you while you're sipping it (unless you're an extraordinarily untalented drinker). When you flip the top open, you do need to hold it open or it might flip down onto your nose - this happened to me and I wound up having to wipe drops of coffee off my nose. It's super easy to clean - just like any other tumbler. so, overall, I would completely recommend this to anybody who needs a travel tumbler that does keep coffee the perfect temperature. If you need something leak-proof, however, because you plan on putting it into your brief case or something, I would recommend getting a different Nissan thermos.
Customer Review: Great Product Summary: 5 Stars
I have quite a collection of 'thermos type cups' and NONE of them would keep my coffee/tea hot for a prolonged period of time. I searched the Internet and looked at a good number of cups and read oodles of reviews. I found the 18 ounce Stainless steel Thermos from Nissan here at Amazon and it immediately caught my attention due to the amount of liquid it holds. 2-4 ounces may not seem like much but when you are driving a lot or in an extended meeting it is very satisfying to have the 'extra' drink there.
When I found this product I initially read all the negative reviews about the leaking etc first, weeding out those few that were totally negative and appeared to be more of a tantrum then a review. Then I read a sampling of the more positive reviews on the product. Nothing is perfect and barring any manufacturing errors this appeared to be what I was looking for and I did purchase the tumbler and am very glad that I did.
First, it does a very good job at keeping warm or hot liquids hot. I can fill it with coffee at 8 in the morning and still be drinking hot coffee after noon. Which is a real switch from the other insulated tumblers I had been using.
Secondly, as stated earlier it does hold a good helping of coffee or tea.
Thirdly, the thermos is spill proof and will not leak, if the top is put on properly. I did notice that the top was a bit fussy pertaining to being screwed down. You had to actually watch what you are doing or it will end up crooked and not do what it was designed to do and the contents will leak when you drink.
The only thing I would caution someone about is due to the product's increased volume capacity it IS taller than other products and will tip more easily if not secured properly in a moving vehicle. But common sense should tell one that much.
Overall I am very happy with the product and will recommend it to anyone.
Customer Review: Holds up to Nissan heat retention, but major design flaw Summary: 3 Stars
I have owned two of these Nissan Thermos travel mugs now and have loved the insulating properties boasted by the company. My coffee stays really hot for quite a while. The mug isn't spill proof and liquid will spill out of the cup even if the spout cover is on, but only if you fill it all the way to the top. The main problem I have with the mug, is for me, insurmountable. There is a NON-REMOVABLE silicone ring inside the mug at the top of the cup that traps liquid inside. It's almost impossible to wash out because you can't get under the ring to scrub the coffee out. I discovered this with my first mug when I noticed after a while that there was a funny smell to my coffee and mug. I washed out the O-ring in the lid, and scrubbed the mug, but it persisted. Then, I noticed the plastic ring on top and decided on a whim to slide a flat toothpick underneath to see if it was a tight seal. Imagine my disgust when the toothpick came out covered with brown, smelly goo. Apparently the seal wasn't tight. I tried my best to scrape as much of the brown stuff out as I could but couldn't ever really bring myself to use the mug again. I thought perhaps it was a defect with that particular cup. I loved its insulating properties so much I bought another one. It has the same problem. Coffee gets trapped underneath and bacteria begins to grow. It's just too gross to keep using. Perhaps, if you soak the mug in warm soapy water immediately after each use, it might stay ok. But given that it's a travel mug, I'm usually not at home once I've finished the coffee I brought with me. I'm going to be looking for a different travel mug that doesn't have the plastic ring on it. I wish Nissan Thermos would fix this. I truly do love all the other aspects of the mug, hence the three stars instead of 1.
Customer Review: Pretty good tumbler with some caveats Summary: 3 Stars
Overall this is a pretty good travel tumbler. With its vacuum layer between the outer and inner stainless walls it provides hours of piping hot beverages on the go.
A few caveats however. I was absolutely stumped why the manufacturer would not create a venting hole in the lid to allow for air exchange as you're drinking. As a result of this oversight the hot coffee will often hold back as you tilt it to drink, only to come gushing onto your upper lip in with red hot fury when the liquid tension is broken. A 1/8 inch hole drilled quickly into the lid solved that problem with little fuss.
Second caveat: after using the tumbler almost daily for a year or more you'll begin to notice discoloration of the inside. Doesn't seem to affect the flavor of the drinks but it's strange nonetheless.
Third caveat: if you put it in the dishwasher repeatedly the black rubber sleeve will eventually get gummy and sticky. I learned my lesson with the first tumbler of this type that I owned and only hand wash this one.
Fourth and final caveat: The flip-top tab that's supposed to minimize spillage is annoying in that, once you flip it up to sip your beverage, you are rewarded with a dot of coffee on the tip of your nose. A drop of coffee always gets retained in the flip-top tab and you have to remember to blot it out with a napkin to avoid this. I'm sometimes slow on the uptake so it took a while for me to remember this in time to avoid it. Certainly not the end of the world but a little irritating.
Despite all these quirks it's one of the better ones I've come across and is worth the price in the end. Especially if you own a drill.
Customer Review: Good but not fabulous Summary: 3 Stars
I love that I finally have a coffee mug that keeps my coffee hot and that is larger than the typical 16oz commuter mug. The size is the reason I purchased this over other insulated commuter mugs. Like the other reviewers, I find the lid is okay but not great. It does leave a little dot of coffee on your nose. The other issue I have is that after washing it (by hand or in the dishwasher), it leaves a water ring wherever I set it down. It's not leaking coffee, but I think water gets into the bottom plastic part with washing and then leaks out, slowly, for HOURS! It takes forever for the water to dry, and there isn't any way to get to the source (underneath the plastic), so you're sort of wiping up a ring every time you pick the mug up. However, I love love love that my coffee stays hot all the way to the last few sips. I'll suffer through the water ring for 18 ounces of hot delicious french roast any day of the week.
Update: I lost the mug, and I'm happy I did. The constant water rings and the constant dot of coffee on my nose were beginning to drive me nuts. I replaced it with the Thermos Stainless King SK1005MB4 and the Thermos Sipp 16-Ounce Vacuum-Insulated Travel Tumbler (16 oz rather than my beloved 18), which are much better. My new mugs keep the coffee piping hot, much hotter than the Thermos Nissan, and for much longer. I can sip my coffee all day long. I can't really recommend the Thermos Nissan anymore. It was better than my non insulated mugs, but I recommend the Thermos Stainless King and the Thermos Sipp Tumbler.
