Thermos Nissan 18-Ounce Stainless-Steel Hydration Bottle
To get it out of the way, there is one problem I've found with the bottle, and it has been mentioned by others: There is a rubber ring that seals the bottle; if you lose it, you'll have to replace it. Some have found success having it replaced by Thermos. I haven't had to, yet. I assume that it's removable because you need to take it out in order to run it through the wash and get it thoroughly clean.
If I were to change it at all, I would probably add some thickness to the metal around the base, or (like with the 22-Ounce Bottle), a removable rubber base. But that's it.
With that out of the way, oh! Thermos, how I love thee; may I count the ways (in no particular order):
- Opens and shuts one-handed. This is great for driving, or any time your other hand is occupied.
- Fits perfectly into a vehicle's beverage container.
- Contains enough water (0.5 litres) to be enough for a workout, but not so much that it's a burden. I've found it also works perfectly for a round of errands around town (and if it's an all-day thing, it's not too hard to find a water fountain).
- Is very light, which is great for taking it around to the gym and the like.
- The normal clasp will keep it from opening when knocked over accidentally.
- There is a latch that will make very certain that it won't open. Should you toss it nonchalantly 15 feet through the air into your car's trunk, it won't damage the Thermos or leak or really have any problems at all.
- It is possible to dent the container if you drop it 3 meters, but it won't break or anything. Mine is pretty nicely dented at this point...
- If you knock the thing over when the lid is open, it will only lose about half its contents because of the way the lip is slightly off-centered, and not at the edge of the cylinder. It's also not quite big enough for water to just tumble out.
- On the other hand, the lip is sized perfectly for at-the-gym guzzling of water.
- Taking off the cap will give you access to the entire diameter of the cylinder, so if you can fit it (ice, etc.) into the cylinder, you don't have to worry about a narrow top that prevents you from putting in in.
- The above is also handy in the dishwasher, since the spray will get to the entire interior easily.
- I've recently begun experimenting with liquids other than water, such as orange juice, and while you'll obviously need to rinse the bottle out (including that rubber ring), there's no lingering taste whatsoever.
- I've learned not to put too much ice in the bottle, because it is so effective at keeping the water cold that it often will still have ice in there when I'm done drinking from it (even if that is a day and a half later). Only put as much ice as would melt to cool the water.
- I've had those ice cubes up to two days later, if the bottle's in an air-conditioned environment.
- Strangely, I've never tried it with hot liquids, but performance is probably similar.
- I bought this at Walgreen's for $10 but it's a rare thing to see it. If you find them at Walgreens, buy all of them. Despite that, you should still buy your first one here, and now.
- This probably wouldn't matter to anyone else, but whenever I pick the bottle up, I always flip it into the air and let it somersault twice before landing in my hand (like juggler's pins). Its weight is perfectly balanced for this, and it doesn't seem to matter if there's water in it or not. When it slaps into my hand, if I've done it right, my thumb will hit the button to open the lid. So picking it up, tossing it up, catching it, unlatching, and drinking become one continuous, fluid movement. It's not something I just could not do with any other bottle. If I drop it, the bottle doesn't spill, and is durable enough not to really care.
This bottle is pretty much as good as you could ever ask a water bottle to be.
