Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Thermos E10500 16-Ounce Leak-Proof Travel MugCustomer Review: THERMOS PRODUCTS ARE THE BEST! Summary: 5 Stars
I looked everywhere for a really sturdy, well built drinking container that would keep my water ice cold for more than an hour or two. I finally decided that the Element 5 series from Thermos sounded like what I wanted. I originally ordered the 22 oz hydration bottle with the flip lid. I was concerned about the flip lid malfunctioning over time but decided to give it a try. I got it in record time (thank you Amazon Prime) and here are my impressions:
PROS:
1. Great size. Not too big or tall to be cumbersome. Holds a good amount of liquid. The opening is plenty large enough to insert ice cubes.
2. Flip lid works wonderfully. I've had it for 7 months and use it every day, all day and have had no problem with the lid. I've knocked it over many times and the lid has never popped open. It also has a a U-shaped metal ring that you can flip up over the push button that opens the lid and it will lock the lid down. I've never used it - never needed to but it's there if you want the extra security. The other thing I love about the flip lid is that it keeps the area you drink from covered and clean in between drinks.
3. Keeps your drink ice cold for more than 24 hours!!! This completely amazed me. I don't like my water even a little bit room temperature. I put about 8 ice cubes in the container and fill it with water in the morning - when I go to bed at about 11pm it is still ice cold and has plenty of ice in it. I usually add a couple ice cubes whenever I refill it with water but only if I'm somewhere that I can get ice, otherwise I just add more water and I've never, ever had my water get warm. I once left it in our vehicle (by accident, trust me) when it went in for service and they had to keep the vehicle overnight. When we picked it up the next day, my water was still cold!
4. The container itself is made of 18/8 dual walled stainless steel so it will never break, which is great for me as I drop it constantly (I'm a bit of a klutz). I haven't even gotten it to dent or scratch with all the banging around and dropping it gets.
5. It does NOT sweat! PERIOD!! This is a huge deal to me. I am so tired of drinking containers that leave rings on my tables, nightstands, etc. The stainless steel container has a really hard rubberized bottom that you can remove to clean (though I haven't needed to) so it keeps the part of the bottle that would sweat inside the rubbery bottom. The bottom is really sturdy and solid. No problems with it staying upright. Actually, I've never seen any condensation on any part of the stainless steel either.
6. It comes with a well constructed and heavy duty ring around the rim that has a place to attach a carbiner (which comes with the bottle) or whatever you want to use to attach it to your backpack, bike, etc. I don't use the carbiner (I just took it off) I attached a braided wrist lanyard which is more convenient for me (I got a couple of them from
www.paracordkeychains./lanyards). They come in cool colors and I just like the way they attach and make it easier to carry the container.
CONS:
Only 1: I just wish they had a holder that fit over the thermos part in order to tote it around. The lanyard works ok but the container does get banged around more because it's swinging around on the end of the lanyard. An elastic holder with a cloth handle would be perfect. I actually found one that kind of works - it came with one of the (dozens) of other containers I've purchased. In any case, this is a teeny, tiny thing. I don't even consider it a real CON - more a wish list thing.
If you are looking for the perfect drinking container, trust me, this is it!!! Thermos has many different types of containers but the Element 5 line is the best as far as I'm concerned. They also have a smaller (16 oz) one that comes with a handle and a different type of lid - it's a screw on lid that you turn 1/4 to 1/2 turn to drink from and you can drink from anywhere on the lid. It states that it is also spill proof. I just bought it for my mother-in-law (who is 89 years old) so we'll see how that goes.
