Customer Review: "Fun" but not very Functional
Summary: 2 Stars
The knife block is fun, at least insofar as it warrants some comments when new visitors come over for a party. However, once the novelty wears off it can't compete with a nice "boring" wood knife block.
The knives you get are the only knives you'll use with it. Want to use two "Chef" knives or a fatter cleaver? Sure. But you'll need to get another block. Want to get some steak knives? Sure. But you'll need another block. (If someone was really industrious they could add new slots with a Dremel cutting wheel... but that's a poor digression.)
The knives themselves are basic and non-special: the feel/weight is wrong, and they are far too fat with really wide-ground edges -- at least they are "stainless steal", right? For the same price (perhaps with a bit of scouting) one could pick up a much better "starter" from J.A. Henckels (although sadly the entry-level "German made" Twin Star Friodur line seems to have been given the boot) or a number of other manufactures: get a knife set designed to be a knife set, not a gimmick.
To get the knives to rest right they have to be "lifted up" as they are inserted (or usually, *after* they are fully inserted) to engage the magnets. I really don't like putting these knives back. Even pretending it is your "Ex" only goes so far. The plastic legs have "snapped open" on a few occasions. It can be snapped back together, sure, but it shouldn't happen to begin with.
And the knife-block itself simply takes up too much space. Some "compact" 30 piece knife sets take up less space. This knife holders definitely makes more of a "gag" than a truly functional piece of a kitchen. Sadly, once the novelty wears off this piece of China-molded plastic is destined for a few million years of landfill life.
(If you do want something for the novelty, consider something smaller and perhaps more useful like the "Fred" toothpick holder; at the very least, buy this item for yourself -- because then you'll have at least $60 of some vested "want" in it -- and not a gift for someone else.)
