Customer Review: Best cat toy ever - with precautionary measures...

The Da Bird is my cats' absolute favorite interactive toy. I've bought probably a dozen or so over the years as they tend to "kill" da birdie every now and then. Getting a package with replacement feathers is certainly a smart move. The feather attachments sounds like a bird flapping its wings when you swing them through the air and the sound drives my cats crazy jumping for it. My oldest isn't that much into jumping any more, but even he can be teased by Da Bird into acting like a kitten. Try having Da Bird crash into a wall and skitter over the floor like it has a broken wing. Even jump-lazy cats won't be able to resist. They also love the sparkler attachment and one of my cats goes nuts for the string with no attachment at all.
With all the fun you and your cats can have with Da Bird, you may want to take a few precautionary measures to avoid problems:
First, I've found that a good proportion of the rods I've bought had problems with the fiberglass splintering. Having those fiberglass splinters bury into your skin can be very painful. The fix: I've wrapped those rods along the entire length with duct tape. It doesn't happen with all of them and most are ok, but some are notorious splinterers.
Second, my cats love Da Bird and its attachments so much that they try to chew off pieces and eat them. One of them once ate an entire attachment when I was called away to the phone for a few minutes. He also has multiple times bitten right through the string and tried to eat it. Of course that's not good for them and it was pure luck he didn't end up blocking his digestive passage. So careful supervision may be needed and it's best to securely lock Da Bird away when you're not watching.
Third, I have a longhair cat who loves Da Bird so much that he will hunt and jump until he pants. I'm pretty sure he would overexert himself if I didn't stop playing with him after a while to let him cool down again. Your cats may get more obsessed with it than is good for them, so watch closely for signs of exertion and overheating.
