Customer Review: Great invention, poor execution

I bought the Taylor Wireless digital cooking thermometer with remote pager, Model #1474, from Amazon in July 2005.
It's a marvelous tool and worked wonderfully for a few months. I boasted about the product to my fellow cooks. Then, some of the "Meat" functions stopped working. However, I used the program function to bypass those problems. This week, 2 months after the warranty expired, the unit all of a sudden went crazy. No matter what the setting, after a few seconds of operation, the temperature display changes to "high," the timer kicks on and starts counting up, and both the base and remote units start beeping. In other words, the device is now useless. And, yes, I used the Reset button but it did not cure the problem.
I've only used the thermometer about 20 times and it has never been dropped or otherwise abused. I note that Taylor doesn't offer that model anymore on its website. And, Amazon is selling the unit at half price. Is that because the whole batch, Made in China, is defective? Was there a recall that I missed?
As much as I liked the 1474, I don't think I'll risk buying another. At several dollars per use, it's too expensive.

Audible Alarm signals when the food is done either from the base unit or remoteTaylor?s innovative remote thermometer lets the home chef monitor cooking without being tied to the kitchen. A durable transmitter and accompanying pager work in tandem to ensure meat is never overdone. To operate, insert the transmitter?s 6-inch steel probe into the main course and place it in the oven. The probe?s heat resistant chord travels from inside the oven, past a closed oven door, and connects to the transmitter sitting on a nearby countertop. Control settings can be set by type of meat or user-selected temperature. When ready, the transmitter sends a signal--reaching up to 120 feet--to trigger an audible alarm. If temperature monitoring is not needed, the versatile base unit can also function as a simple timer. Both transmitter and pager feature sturdy plastic construction and offer a clear digital number display. The transmitter requires one 9-volt battery while the pager runs with two AAAs--batteries not included with purchase.
