Not much more to say. Our first one sat in the oven for probably 5 years until it was so spattered and stained we couldn't read it anymore. These things are very durable, simple, and much more reliable than your oven's internal thermometer. If you live in an apartment, where the oven and its past treatment are unknown, this is absolutely required if you want to bake anything. Not to mention, its cheap insurance so you don't waste hours just to find out your thermometer just went off the chart by 40 degrees and your food is ruined.Customer Review: buyer beware

The temperature readings were spot on.
There are multiple ways to display it, hang it from the shelves in your oven, place it on the bottom of your oven. it's very stable, doesn't fall over, mostly because of it's 4 inch length.
BUT... as with all things in the oven, this will become splattered with grease, and harder to read, and you'll want to wash it....DON'T!
any type of cleaning, be it abrasive , or chemical, such as Simple Green, will erase the temperature markings... and make it useless.

I bought this because Cooks Illustrated magazine rated it as the best over thermometer and I trust them. This had been in my oven for about 1 year when I decided the food splashes needed to be cleaned off because they were making it hard to read the numbers. I used a damp soapy sponge and wiped the face of the thermometer (it was cold).
The temperature markings wiped right off!
I didn't put this in the dishwasher or use an abrasive like Ajax. Just soap and a sponge. Now it has no numbers. Now it is useless.

No matter how or where I mount this thermometer, I can't tell what the temp is in my oven. I've got a squeaky clean window, so that isn't the problem. I've tried to put it as close to the window without being in the way of the food I'm cooking. I've tried it with the internal light on and off. I've tried different angles by bending the base. I even tried to rotate the thermometer glass (VERY carefully). No matter what I tried, I still can't read the darn thing. Easiest to use/read and most accurate oven thermometer that I've used (out of five different models). The warnings about the markings coming off with heavy cleaning are true, and I've had to buy replacements due to this. That stated, I've chosen to buy another of these instead of go back to one of the less preferred ones I have in my drawer. The only solution I've come up with is to try to keep it clean with regular gentle washings with a soapy sponge, thus avoiding the need for heavy cleaning.
