Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Taylor Oven Guide ThermometerCustomer Review: Save Your Money Summary: 1 Stars
When the thermometer arrived, the glass tube slid freely in the metal frame, making calibration useless. Amazon's supplier said they'd replace it, and since it was fairly inexpensive, don't bother returning it. I threw it away.
The replacement arrived and was much better, and quite accurate, but within 2-3 months in the oven the metal darkened so much (not spattered food, just dark metal), that the black numbers became almost impossible to read - and invisible through the oven door. I don't really use the oven that much, especially in the summer - which is now. Maybe once a week, and I'm not making pizza at 550 F, and it's not a self-cleaning oven either. Then I get a message from Amazon that since they never got a return of the first one they would now charge me for the second. Deep sigh - it's only $12, I tell myself, WTF.
Then today, I pick the thermometer up (the only way to read it) with gloves, from my preheated oven and the fluid that is supposed to indicate the temperature is spread throughout the tube like a freakin' bar code. Totally useless, and it won't shake down like a fever thermometer. Second one in the trash. I will NOT buy a third.
Customer Review: Read this concerning the temp markings Summary: 4 Stars
It's too bad that the markings come off from washing, but there's something you can do like I do. If your baking temp will be below 400, use a candy thermometer instead. Mine has a clip on it that slides over round glass that is about as round as my finger. Amazon has them too, search for "candy thermometers". I slide the clip to the center of the thermometer for balance, hook it onto the oven shelf grating from underneath it, slide it to the very front so it is just under the level of what's being baked, then rotate the glass so the liquid level indicator comes into focus. I have the one with the plastic cap at the top, and I pull that off before my candy thermometer goes into the oven so it doesn't melt. Insert or remove the candy thermometer in the oven and wash your candy thermometer only when it is at room temp to avoid breaking it. Save your Taylor for foods baked at 400 and above so it lasts longer. Use a glass-encased candy thermometer for ease of cleaning for foods baked below 400, which is then in the range of the candy thermometer. That make sense?
Customer Review: Was Looking For It A Longtime......... Summary: 5 Stars
I am so happy that Amazon is carrying this thermometer. I have been looking for this
for a longtime since my local hardware store could not get it any more.
I find it to be accurate and easy to place in the oven. Also easy to read from the
oven window. Very large numbers in black lettering to find the reading easy from
a distance. I find this type of thermometer better then the spring type of meters
of today.
Easy to clean. Do clean it as early as possible after use.
It can stand on the oven rack or hang from one of the rack brackets
Taylor is also a very special name in thermometers
Pls do try it. As I have said, I have been looking for this a longtime because of my
past experience with this style thermometer I loved in the past.
I should have gotten another one for the future in case of a accident.
Customer Review: Finally... one that worked! Summary: 5 Stars
Ok... oven not seeming to be hot enough... bought an oven thermometer at Kroger's.. not expensive. Well, that purchase didn't seem to heat up as much as the oven..
Went to William and Sonoma and bought the Taylor 503, much more expensive. So it should really be good, right? That thermometer seemed to be so, so slow in reaction. And thanks to the position of my oven light.. I couldn't even read it.
Went to Amazon and got an overnight delivery of the Taylor Oven Guide Thermometer. ( don't add all of this up...three thermometers.. it's ridiculous)Bottom line... this one was perfect for me. As far as complaints of grease and cleaning and losing lettering?? I take it out before I put the item in to bake. (Hint..use tongs to remove it as it is HOT. If you use mitts or hot pads.. I guarantee you.. you will drop it.)
Customer Review: Pretty good, except for two flaws... Summary: 3 Stars
The thermometer seems to be quite accurate. The biggest flaw is the numbers. As others have said, they come off very easily if you aren't careful. They could also be larger, and in a more contrasting color - when the metal tints from the heat, they're black on brown, for a low contrast. I bought this one because liquid devices are more accurate than bimetallic (dial) devices, but the most accurate thermometer can't help if you can't read it. The other flaw is that you can't tilt the thermometer. That means you'll have to bend the feet, depending on where you place the thermometer, until you have a good viewing angle. These folks need to get together with the guys at OXO who really seem to know how to design stuff for usability.
