Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Taylor Classic Instant-Read Pocket Thermometer

Customer Review: Great for soap making!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought two of these when I began making home made soap. I use one for the lye and one for the oils. The stainless steel is great for this so I don't have to remember which is which between uses.

I tested them against each other and against another thermometer I had and they were perfectly accurate out of the box, but I love that I can adjust them if they vary over time.

Price was right too.

Customer Review: Great value
Summary: 1 Stars

I have been using these Taylor Instant-Read thermometers for years in my deli. They are very durable and have lasted a long time. Since you have to be very careful in having food temps just right, these thermometers are easy to use as often as needed. Prices are great. They are worth more but cost less making them a great bargin. Made mistake in giving this item only one star, should have been 5. Sorry.

Customer Review: Sturdy and reliable
Summary: 4 Stars

This thing lasted through an accidental spin in the food processor. Besides that durable aspect, it's straightforward and uncomplicated so it's a no brainer to use. But the gauge slows down as it gets closer to the actual temperature- so be patient for several seconds as it climbs up towards the final reading. It's not like weighing fruit at the grocery and getting a quick reading off the scale...

Customer Review: Disappointing
Summary: 1 Stars

For the price I paid, I guess I shouldn't have expected too much, but I really can't even use his thermometer. Checking visually for doneness is about as reliable. It takes so long for the temperature to register that the food loses heat while you are checking its temperature, and if it is not done then it just has to cook longer because it takes over a minute for the needle to register 160 degrees.

Customer Review: the industry standard - for good reason
Summary: 4 Stars

I've had this thermometer for a while and I test it every so often for ice water (0 degrees) and boiling water (212) and it never wavers by more than 3 degrees. Its very simple and tough. The only limitation is perhaps that it takes a bit of time to read the temp, maybe 15 seconds. Skip the batteries, the infrared, and fork shaped thermometers. Stick to Taylor or their subsidiary Trutemp.
