Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Taylor Classic Instant-Read Pocket ThermometerCustomer Review: Great Little Thermometer for the Money! Summary: 5 Stars
Nice little thermometer and it comes with its own little bright yellow case (not shown in the product photo) which is quite handy. Doesn't take up much room in the drawer, easy to find in its little bright yellow case when we need it, easy to read and yes, it is "pocket-sized" so will be great to take out to the grill when the weather gets warmer. Accurate as well. For the money, you would have a hard time finding a better deal. For people who use a cooking thermometer only occasionally like we do, I would highly recommend this one. They sell larger ones, digital ones, ones with "hangers" to fit on the side of a pot (easily remedied with a paper clip, we've found ~ no big deal), but for an all-around handy thermometer this one fit the bill quite nicely for us. And qualified for Amazon Free SuperSaver Shipping as well (delivered five days after we ordere it). Could not ask for more.
Customer Review: Not very accurate, but it is precise. Summary: 3 Stars
It registers that water boils at 202 degrees yet also registers that ice water is 42 degrees. This means that a calibration won't help its case in being universally accurate. But it does read the same value every time and is precise with its own eschewed readings. This means that it will read 202 degress every time for boiling water. The good news is that meat temperatures are in between the extremes and are more universally accurate.
I use this for measuring the temperature of water to brew coffee and tea and just add about ten degrees to the reading to attain the correct values.
Its cheap and can be calibrated for easily. If you only use it for measuring hot water then calibrate it to the boiling temp of water. If you use it for cold items, calibrate it with ice water. If you use it for a variety of things then just factor in those systematic errors.
Customer Review: Fast, accurate, and simple to use, it's the best! Summary: 5 Stars
This is the best thermometer I have owned, and I have owned a few. (One did not give a fast reading and had a prong that broke off. Another was digital and a bother to turn on and remember to turn off, in addition to taking too long to give a reading and being relatively expensive.) This thermometer is compact and simply designed, ridiculously easy to use, and gives a fast and accurate reading. For example, from room temperature to 160 degrees F, it takes just about five seconds. The relatively fine point at the end makes it easy to insert into meats, unlike some bulky-pronged thermometers I have had. This plastic case with a pocket clip is great, too. Forget about the fancier, more expensive gadgets. -- this little gadget performs like a dream, and the price is right.
Customer Review: How deep should it go? Summary: 1 Stars
Here's the problem with this thermometer. For measurements in "thin" meats, like fish, poultry or even a thin hamburger or steak, well, it always registers less than you would expect. Example: a quarter pound hamburger. Insert it vertically into the burger, the temperature doesn't hit 165. But insert length wise so that a larger portion of the rod is immersed in the food, and suddenly, you'll find you may have overcooked that burger. Maybe it's 165, or even 180. You can prove my point by doing this yourself. Stick the rod into the thickness of two hamburgers, and you realize you've cooked them enough. Try it with one, and you'll cook it for another 5 or 6 minutes; really way too much. So which is the correct reading?
Customer Review: required for active dry yeast Summary: 5 Stars
I have to use this to gauge water temperture otherwise my yeast won't bloom and then my bread dough will be useless. I like the strong plastic protector for the sharp pin. At the time that I bought this, it was cheaper than the candy thermometer which has the added advantage of hooking onto the side of the pot. However, this one can be stabbed into meat and the candy thermometer cannot be.
I use this all the time so it is not gathering dust.
Is this frugal? yes I need it to make bread
Would I have purchased this used at a cheaper price off of craigslist? no
Did I shop around for the best total price including the manufacturer's website? yes and so should you
