Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Taylor 9842 Commercial Waterproof Digital ThermometerCustomer Review: I've had mine for over 5 years Summary: 5 Stars
I actually have the Taylor 9840. It is the prior version, which has a manual on/off switch and works only in F (US temp).
The addition of the auto off feature is great. The Taylor 9842 (the one listed on Amazon.com) will automatically shut off if the unit is not used for 10 minutes. This is a very nice addition.
My prior version, the Taylor 9840, is not water proof. The water can leak in through the on/off switch and at other places. However, I snapped it apart at the middle seam, allowed it to dry, and it works fine again. As simple as changing the battery***.
These thermometers are simple to use and accurate. Can't ask for more.
Just be very careful when washing and don't wash it in the dishwasher. The unit to too fragile to survive.
***The batteries are replaced on the Taylor 9840 differently than on the 9842, so you will not be able to snap the 9842 apart like I do on the older unit.
Customer Review: Look out if you buy a second one - ignorance could be bliss Summary: 1 Stars
I already owned one of these for several years. I recently bought another from Amazon of the exact same brand/model, to have two. I use them for cooking and testing the hot water temp out of the kitchen tap. Would you believe they disagreed by 11-12 degrees F or more? Same tap, one says 121 and the other 150. So I brought a pot of water to boil to see which one is closer to 212 (sea level of course - I am about 600 feet up in the Chicago area so boiling temp should be a little lower). One got to about 210.5 and sat there. Good enough for this price. The other was all over the place. I tried adjusting the temp via the calibration screw. That did not help. I don't know which thermometer was new and which was my older one - they look identical. Makes no difference really - the one off went off to the trash. If you rely on the temperature the Taylor gives - it does register to tenths of a degree - get a second opinion, or do the boiling water test.
Customer Review: Great expectations...that remain unfufilled Summary: 1 Stars
I have been searching for a reliable, instant readout digital thermometer for a while now. I don't expect to find one that will survive a dishwasher or a nuclear holocaust; but I would hope at the least that it would survive hand washing and become a reliable part of my kitchen for the next year or so.
Unfortunately, what I got was a cute, bright colored thermometer that died in less than 5 uses. I never submerged it in water; I always turned the unit off when not using it. I used it for less than a minute each time.
I figured that it was something I did. Maybe it got hit by some stray bit of water (I had no idea that it was meant to be waterproof and had been treating it with kid gloves). It wasn't until I went online to buy a new one that I even found out that it was supposed to be waterproof.
At $13-$15 dollars retail, I figure that my instant readouts cost about $2.50 to $3 dollars each.
Customer Review: Accurate, durable and fantastic customer service Summary: 5 Stars
My first thermometer experienced some sort of issue with the display and started showing random numbers on the screen. I contacted Taylor and they recommended sending it in for a replacement (even though I had it longer than the year warranty). Within 2 weeks after sending it in I had a new thermometer.
This is perfect for measuring the ideal temperature of water for my tea and Aeropress. I have also used this to measure the temperature of the air in my apartment as well as internal temp of meats.
When they say waterproof...they mean it! I accidentally dropped this into a teapot of boiling water. It stayed in there for 1 minute in 200+ degree water. After pulling it out the entire screen was black and I was sad to throw it out. The next day when I got on Amazon to re-order one I noticed their waterproof claim. I dug the thermometer out of the trash and sure enough it was working! Amazing.
Customer Review: Now I now exactly when my fish is done. Summary: 5 Stars
I had always guessed when meat was done. After years of inconsistent results, I finally bought this thermometer. Now I now exactly when my fish is done. I wonder why I waited so long! It reads in just a few seconds, and the tip is ultra narrow which prevents visible holes in meats. In fact, in the version of the thermometer I received, the tip is even narrower than shown in the Amazon image. Perhaps this is a recent (2009) enhancement.
Because this thermometer is so easy to use, I find myself measuring the temp of all kinds of things. For example, I use it to check the temp of water so that I get that perfect cup of tea.
The thermometer is very accurate: boiling water reads about 211.5 degrees. The thermometer has an adjustment screw, so I could dial it in to read exactly 212, but 1/2 degree is close enough for me.
Overall, I love this thermometer, and I highly recommend it.
