Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Taylor 9842 Commercial Waterproof Digital Thermometer

Customer Review: Auto off is worth the upgrade, BUT NOT REALLY WATERPROOF!
Summary: 4 Stars

After my wife boiled our Taylor Digital Instant-Read Pocket Thermometer in a batch of homemade yogurt,
I decided to get this one, which is "waterproof"

I was pleasantly surprised to find that this has an "auto off" feature - Our older one had a slide switch so you could accidentally leave it on. Battery changes are a pain and each time you open it, you risk breaking the very delicate wires inside.

This costs just a bit more but you make that up with the first battery change you avoid. One thing to note is that it does seem a hair less instant on the read than our older one, which is why I dinged it one star from five.

UPDATE - the thermometer started acting funny so I took the battery out and was getting ready to ship it back to Taylor for replacement. Before I put packed it up I tried it one more time and it worked. My theory is that there was some moisture inside and with the battery cover off it was able to dry out.

Needless to say I'm a little disappointed. If you have to dunk this thermometer to clean it I recommend removing the battery cover and making sure moisture doesn't get trapped inside.

Though it's only water resistant, I'd still buy it.

If you have any questions or if this review helped, please let me know.

Customer Review: The best piece of kitchen equipment I own...
Summary: 5 Stars

...and I own a lot! It's reasonably quick, very accurate, and VERY durable! That last part is especially important as I can be rather absent minded sometimes. I left it out on the grill on a very rainy Oregon week and fully expected it to be toast. To my great delight, I turned it on and it worked just fine!

I've had more than a few probe thermometer probes (the kind with the metal thermometer wired to a base unit that looks like a small alarm clock) turn wildly inaccurate over time, but this doesn't share those problems in the least. I've probably used it over 400 times by now, and it's still going strong, on its original battery no less.

The thermometer has two nice features worth mentioning: first is the shape of the head- it's mostly circular, but with flattened sections on the top and bottom so that you can lay it down on the counter without it rolling all over the place.

The other nice thing is the sharp point and slim profile of the probe, probably about the same width as a headphone connector. These factors make insertion into a nice medium-rare steak much less like pushing a rope than with thicker, blunter thermometers and doesn't poke a huge hole in the meat. (Though for roasting, you should probably plug the hole back up with a bamboo skewer or something.)

Customer Review: Know your heat
Summary: 5 Stars

I used this thermometer for the first time last night. I did a butterfly chicken smoke on the WSM. The heat inside the beast was 325F and the chicken was cooking away. At the 45min mark I opened the lid for the first time and checked the breast and thigh with this thermometer. Breast showed 155 and thigh was at 148. Had a little more to go. With the rush of oxygen into the coal chamber, the overall heat went up to 350. The chicken was sizzling. Another 15minutes later I opened the lid once more, pulled out my handy Taylor 9842 Digital Thermometer and stuck the pointy probe into the breast of the chicken. 161.5F ! We are good...now for the thigh. 171F ! Oh yes this bird was ready to come off. The end result? Super juicy and perfectly done fall off the bone meat. Thank you Taylor 9842 Commercial Waterproof Digital Thermometer for letting my know when my dinner was ready to be devoured.

I highly recommend this thermometer for its quick read and high accuracy. If you are a BBQ-Smoker, this yellow guy is essential. Clean up is a breeze thanks to its Waterproof nature.

Customer Review: Great Thermometer, Great Price...
Summary: 5 Stars

I already own several thermometers and bought this one just to use with the grill outside. I was surprised at how quickly it became my main thermomoeter both inside and outside.

Pros:

-Nice compact size, about the size of a ballpoint pen plus the head. Easy to carry.
-Cleanup is a snap.
-Accurate. I tested it against a much more expensive infrared thermometer on hot liquids, this little Taylor was within 0.3 degrees on every measurement.
-It registers within 5-6 seconds, about 2-3 times faster than my other comperable thermometers. This makes a big difference when you are holding a steak over the grill!

Cons:
-The buttons are a little small.
-It isn't very sturdy, I wouldn't put it in the oven or even leave it in the sun when grilling. It's size makes up for this, I just stick it in a pocket (after putting on the protective sleve of course) and keep it with me.

Overall a nice purchase considering the price I paid, I ordered a second one to use inside.

Customer Review: First one a lemon
Summary: 3 Stars

First one said our Christmas turkey was at 222 degrees! Tried ice water . Read LLL . At Taylor website no error code listed. Calibration screw did nothing. It said ambient air temp was 37 degrees and kept searching. Sent it back -Amazon paid for the mail back. Another sent within a day. This one was ok out of the box . Haven't used it long enough to report on reliability or accuracy. Our old CDN non digital still functions and has one feature sorely lacking on the Taylor-a scale for what temperature Beef or Poultry should be cooked to , i.e. 120, 175. Amazon had me worrying about whether this item would get here for the holiday. I ordered it well within their arrival guidlines for free shipping. It was not mailed for a full 4 days after I orederd and was slated for arrival on Christmas eve. Well when it was mailed it got here in a day (from Seattle to Portland, two days early , and perhaps they knew it would get here that fast, but it felt like a roll of the dice to me , not exactly what you need for Christmas .
