Customer Review: Large Capabilities in a Small Package

When I first opened the box and saw the size of this unit I checked the packing slip to make sure it wasn't the "junior" version, but this little baby packs a lot of functionality considering its size and traffic-pylon orange exterior. Its five-second reads are consistent and accurate - so much so that I find myself testing anything in the house that's hotter than room temperature (which it also picks up quite well).
The well-positioned HOLD button (top-left near the probe) allows you to focus on getting the probe properly positioned while you wait before removing the device to read the fairly-large LCD display. If you're really in a hurry to see the temp while you wait, the blue backlight (activated by pressing the centrally-located ON/OFF button a second time) works like a champ. The MAX feature is also a nice fallback option in case you're slow on the draw with the HOLD button.
Given the reasonable $16 USD price, two minor nits: small form factor (this may be a plus for others) and activating the backlight when holding down ON/OFF to force a shutdown, are really not serious drawbacks. In fact, letting the unit turn itself off automatically (another nice feature) probably draws less power than holding down the ON/OFF button. Unless you actually require two-second reads, I don't think you can go wrong with this temperature probe (it somehow seems inappropriate to call this precision instrument a "thermometer").
