Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Taylor 1470 Digital Cooking Thermometer/TimerCustomer Review: Great little unit... Summary: 5 Stars
I was impressed by the ease with which it could be mounted (the thermo unit) outside of the oven itself. It took me a little while to find a "spot" on my oven door where the magnetic base would attach without pulling on the probe and feed line, but I found one.
The numebers are easy to read at a slight distance, the timer and temp alarm are easy to hear, and all in all a superb little unit. No more poking a hole in my tin-foil tent so the old thermometer can stick out of the turkey and NOT be read without pulling the bird out.
Why anyone would complain about the unit melting is beyond me, the instructions and even the pictograph of the thing show the unit OUTSIDE of the oven. Read your general instructions people!
Customer Review: Taylor Rocks! Summary: 5 Stars
I have owned my Taylor for over three years and use it quite regularly, mostly for BBQ. I have never had a bit of trouble with it. Maybe this is due to the fact that my BBQ temps never exceed 250° and my internal meat temps never exceed 200°.
I am a menber of a BBQ forum and most members prefer Taylor. The Poulder is the brand that will crap out on you.
For those having difficulty with probe breakdown: Moisture often collects where the mesh wire meets the probe causing it to spaz out. Boil the probe in oil. This forces the moisture out and almost always give you a good reusable probe. Disclaimer: This does not always work and messing with boiling oil, moisture and metal can cause severe burns. Becareful!
Customer Review: Best Timer & Thermometer! Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this for a few years now and love it! I've never had any problems. It's been dropped, left in a hot kitchen, left on overnight, spilled liquid on and more and still works great.
Count up, count down, instant temperature, temperature timer all are great. I can set a temperature, put the end in the food inside the oven and go do something else and when the temperature timer goes off I can finish preparing the rest of the meal and everything is ready at the same time - no more guessing and no more staggered serving.
Magnet on the back sticks to stove when cooking and on the fridge when not cooking. Also on the back is a temp guide for meats, fish and poultry.
I plan on getting several more for family and friends.
Customer Review: Nothing special Summary: 3 Stars
The plastic case warps easily, which sucks because its a THERMOMETER. By the time mine died (five month lifespan tops), the case was warped substantially. No wonder water got inside when I was cleaning all the grease off it. And it will, because the probe's cord is way too short. It needs to be at least another two feet longer. And don't put the probe in the washing machine. For some reason, it can stand being in a friggin oven but not the washer. After the dish washer the temp reading was off by a good ten degrees.
I gave it 3 stars because 1) its cheap 2) its just as bad as the majority of these type thermometers adn 3) for all its crappiness it did work while it wasn't being abused.
Customer Review: Raw foodist perspective: works great for my purposes Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this thermometer to use it with my dehydrator. If you want a living raw food, you need to make sure that the food temperature doesn't go too high, else the enzymes start to die. However, initially is okay to use a higher temperature - you just need to lower it after you get there, and this technique reduces the drying time to half or so. The dehydrator I have doesn't have a thermometer (of course it has a thermostat), so the Taylor comes handy to measure the air temperature to know when it's time to do that. Also, it's very precise.
Since I'm not going to use for oven temperature, but for something much lower, I expect this to last a lifetime. As such, it's an inexpensive gadget worth having!
