Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Taylor 1470 Digital Cooking Thermometer/Timer

Customer Review: Lousy - broken after one year
Summary: 1 Stars

I put this on my wishlist after my wife dropped my Pyrex model into the soup; after it dried out, it would still function as a timer, but the temperature gauge didn't measure accurately.

I was hoping this one would be a good replacement, and it works, but there are a couple of things I don't like about it:

* Stiff buttons - especially the power switch. I can't turn it on one handed.
* Floppy display - The display will not stay standing all the way up unless you push it forward until just before it feels like it's going to break. This makes it hard to use when placed on the range hood (a logical place to keep it out of the way and still within arm's reach).

Other than that, it's okay.

*UPDATE*: This timer is now officially broken, after less than one year. The timer button no longer works. Look elsewhere.

Customer Review: Great Until It Stops working
Summary: 2 Stars

I picked one of these up last Thanksgiving for the turkey and it worked wonderfully. It responded so fast that it I was able to use it almost like I would an instant read. And, unlike the Polder probe thermometers, there is an on-off switch you can use on this unit.

The bad news is that while it still works wonderfully as a probe thermometer, it is useless as a timer because it no longer can make any sounds. I use it solely as a back-up to my new Polder at this point, using it when I'm making two roasts at once or need to monitor two temperatures separately (such as white and dark meat of fowl).

If you don't plan to use it too often or only need it for the big holiday meals, it's worth saving a few bucks and choosing the Taylor. However, if you have need of a high-quality probe thermometer for long-term use, go with a different brand.

Customer Review: Very handy, not very sturdy
Summary: 3 Stars

It's all true. A digital thermometer is an indespensible tool for the kitchen. This one works great for a while, and then starts giving erroneous results, so beware.

The digital timer feature is handy, although not very well done. It makes a raucous noise when you turn it on. And setting the time is a bit inconvenient as you can't reduce the amount of time.

Although the metal wire and probe and temperature alarm feature might make you think you can leave the probe in your food while it's cooking, DON'T. The probe will conduct heat into the middle of your food much faster than the meat will, and so the meat around the probe will get cooked and the probe will tell you (totally accurately) that the meat is done, it's only referring to the meat right next to the very hot probe. The rest of your meat is not yet cooked.

Customer Review: Great product as long as you use it correctly.

The Taylor remote thermometer has the best bang for your buck. You can go with another brand and pay more money, but you will probably experience the same problem with the probes. If any of these probes are exposed to heat over 390 degrees F., the probe will melt and malfunction. I expect that most of the negative reviews here are because of this issue. To avoid the problem with a roast, you can roast at a moderate temp (350 F). Otherwise, you can put you oven on high (500 F), brown the roast, then set the oven to a lower temp (275 F), cover the roast with foil, insert the probe, and go from there. This method is preferred in many cook books and works very well.

Just in case, I contacted Taylor through their website. Although they do not offer the probes online, if you send them an email they will provide the info to purchase them.

Customer Review: LOVED it until it broke!
Summary: 3 Stars

Like others, I was thrilled with this product - in one weekend, I made candy with my children at about six different temperatures and everything came out perfect. We had fun doing science experiments with everything from the freezer to coffee - guess what the temperature is?

Then I used it on pork chops on the grill, and once the chops reached 120 degrees, the thermometer beeped (it wasn't supposed to until 160 degrees), and registered "HI" as the current temperature.

I emailed Taylor to ask them about the problem, and they are shipping me a new probe (FOR FREE) and will replace future ones for Now, I'm relatively satisfied. I have talked to others that use another brand of digital thermometer, and they haven't had the "probe problem" that this make seems to have. Seems to be a defect that the Taylor is trying to remedy, though!
