Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Taylor 1470 Digital Cooking Thermometer/TimerCustomer Review: Never breaks! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this thermometer at my parents' recommendation, and I love it! It tells you the correct temperatures at which to cook pork, chicken, and other meats; you can use it as a timer; and you can use it in the oven or on the stove.
Yesterday, my husband attached the magnetic back onto the front of our stove while cooking pork chops. When the meat reached the correct temperature, it started beeping. But when I went to turn it off, I noticed that most of the screen had turned black and the back had melted because of the oven's heat. Disappointed, (but impressed that it had still correctly read the temperature), I tossed it in the trash and went to order another one. But a 1/2 hour later, I noticed it sitting on the top of the trash, screen in perfect clarity, good as new again!! It works just as well as the day I bought it, with only minor aesthetic damage from the plastic melting. This is truly a great device!!!
Customer Review: How to fix it Summary: 3 Stars
Had the same problems as many other reviewers, worked great for awhile then starting giving a Hi indication. This appears to be a problem with the probe and new probes which appear to fix it can be obtained at www.chefdepot.com. The instructions for the device states:
-dont expose the thermometer to water, dirct heat, a hot surface or direct sunlight (they do reccommend sterilizing the probe in boiling water prior to each, so presumably their advice to avoid exposing the thermometer to water-perhaps this means the electronics portion and not the probe?)
-avoid getting the sensor plug wet
-dont use in an oven with a temp higher than 200C/392F
-dont allow the probe to directly contact bone in the food to be cooked
-dont use in a microwave
Perhaps the difference in the working life of the thermometer is related to how closely these admonitions are followed
hope this helps
Customer Review: Must Have Item for Cooks!! Summary: 5 Stars
If you use an oven, you need this item! With the rising cost of meats these days, one can't afford to not cook meat properly. The Taylor Thermometer is an improved design from the original by Polder in that it has an on-off switch,--a good feature in anything that requires batteries. You'll save the price of this thermometer within two cooking sessions, because your meats will be cooked perfectly, and you won't risk burning yourself opening and testing inside a hot oven,--the remote sensor is the ONLY way to measure meat temperatures! With the precise measuring capability of this thermometer, you can judge when to precisely pull a meal from the oven and both avoid over cooking and undercooking (critical with some meats today) foods. I won't work in a kitchen without this!! This is the thermometer that the Santa Barbara Greek Festival uses for their pastry preparations! (I know,--it's mine!)
Customer Review: Nice gadget, but not perfect. Worth buying though! Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased this probe thermometer because I started getting into real barbecuing, I mean meat smoking. It works pretty good. The temperatures are not as accurate as most instant read thermometer's, but then again, you can't leave an instant read thermometer in your oven. However, compared to the rest that I looked at... it is decent in the price isn't too bad comparison to the other units that are like this one. One thing you will want to do, purchased an extra probe cable. They get kind of dirty and they're a little bit difficult to clean. They're good for several uses, but after awhile the actual chord gets a bit gunky. All in all... I would recommend this unit... but I think probe thermometer's are far from perfect. Nice gadget to have around the house, though. One more thing, the magnet on the back... very nice feature. It also has a timer that works independently of the thermometer.
Customer Review: How did I cook without you Summary: 5 Stars
This digital device is the ultimate thing of beauty. As everyone knows, oven temperatures are imprecise so how do you know when your food (esp. meat) is done. The answer is use this product. The metal probe is designed to be inserted into a piece of meat with the ovenproof wire connecting it to the thermometer which must stay outside of the oven. The magnetized base allows the thermometer to be stuck right outside of the oven. When the meat reaches the target temperature, it will let out an alert. The end result is beautifully cooked meat to the desired level of "doneness." I recommend undercooking by about 5-10 degrees since there will be carryover cooking time (assuming you rest the meat). The device is amazingly easy to use. If you can program a digital watch, you can figure this gadget out. It also has a timer function in case you are working on two dishes at once.
