Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Taylor 1470 Digital Cooking Thermometer/TimerCustomer Review: No More Worries About Salmonella Summary: 5 Stars
We've all been there. You're cooking your food and you start to get worried about a foodborne illness, so you keep cooking your food just to be sure. The next thing you know, you've got food that's free of a foodborne illness, but it's also free of any and all juices it may have ever had. Your food is dry as a bone.
Enter the Taylor Digital Oven Thermometer and Timer. Ever since buying this product, I've yet to be worried about my food. Chicken? Just put the probe in, cook the food until it beeps at me to let me know it's at the proper temperature, stop cooking, and enjoy the juiciest chicken you've ever had.
I am by NO means a good cook, but I constantly receive compliments on how juicy and tasty my chicken, steaks, pork chops, and more are. I absolutely claim no responsibility and can thank my Thermometer/Timer for making me look good. It's amazing what happens when you cook food to the correct temperature and far more.
Even better, your dinner will be done faster because your food doesn't take as long to cook as you think it does. You'll get your food faster, not have to worry about foodborne illnesses, and enjoy your food THAT much more. Don't cook without it!
Customer Review: Great thermometer, great price Summary: 5 Stars
I'm really pleased with this thermometer. I opened it up Friday, and have since used it on Meatloaf (which ended up being the juciest I've ever made-and you know how hard it can be to tell if hamburger and tomato sauce is done enough!) and a roast. I ended up using it to melt candlewax to the right temperature yesterday, and it worked perfectly. Because I have a glass top range and the door is glass, there's no place for the magnets to 'stick', but it would be cool if I could hang it on the oven door. Hardly an inconvenience, though, considering you can set it on the counter next to your stove and tilt reading window to any angle. My conventional thermometer was hard to read unless you opened the door and stuck your head halfway into the oven. I was going to try the fork-thermometer thing, but this is even neater because you don't have to open your oven door to check temperatures. In Florida where the kitchen is usually the hottest room in the house, that's a real plus. I bet over time, this thermometer will actually pay for itself in the energy it saves me to cool my home from opening the oven, and to reheat the oven once you close the door again! Great concept-I'm thrilled.
Customer Review: Wonderful product, short lived :-( Summary: 3 Stars
Even when directions are followed rigorously, the probes on these guys are prone to melting down. I've purchased one from all the major distributors, and they all work the same. Taylor or somebody needs to sell a 10-pak of probes, instead of me buying a whole new unit every 4 months... They do work great though. I use an older gas oven that has trouble maintaining proper cooking temperature. The secondary dial that I've installed inside can read as much as 50 degrees different from the digital dial on the oven. Because of this, I prefer to probe and track the cooking temp of the food instead so that I can provide a perfectly cooked product. I also use this for making tea, as 212 is too hot for good tea, and 185 to 195 is a better temperature.Still, the probe does melt down as other have said. I typically get about 30 to 50 uses before I need to purchase another. The problem occurs mostly when the oven temp exceeds 350, as I lose most probes when baking breads. Still, I can't live without it, I just wish Taylor would start selling a package of probes for my dozen `timers' that I have sitting around the kitchen. It would be 5 stars if the probes didn't die.
Customer Review: Can't live without it! Summary: 5 Stars
I am a fan of medium rare meat. I don't overcook pork. I cook and bake a lot! After standing at the stove trying to stir a creme anglaise with one hand while holding my "instant read" thermometer with the other, I finally figured out that I could just drop the probe into the pot and set the alarm. I still have to stir, but I can do things with the other hand and not be watching the pot as closely. I have recipes that require that you maintain a temperature range of 165-180 degrees, so I just set the alarm at 175 and can attend to two things at a time. I wish that they would make one for candy and frying, but for the roasting, baking and cooking that I use it for now, it's great! I also use it as a timer without the probe. It folds flat and has a magnet, so I stick it onto the fridge next to my KA mixer and time my mixing. My house is pretty large, but I can hear the alarm all over the house, it's definitely loud enough. If you are a serious cook or just a beginner trying to get the hang of roastin, you shouldn't be without this.
Customer Review: Great and durable product Summary: 5 Stars
I'm not really sure where some people seem to be having problems with this, but I have had mine for 3 years now and am continually impressed with it's accuracy and durability. I smoke out a lot of meats for family BBQ's all the time and have several of these units. They are highly accurate. If you don't believe it when you get it, either freeze or boil the probe. You'll get 32 and 212 degrees each time (PS if you are testing this at altitude, remember that your water boils at a slightly lower temp). I even left one of these out in a tunderstorm overnight once. I thought it was lost. The display was all screwed up and nothing was working. I left it for a bout a week and once it fully dried out it started right up again. I tested the calibration just to be sure...and guess what..32 and 212 yet again. Dont let any of the other reviews sway you from buying this. It is absolutely the best temp guage out there in it's price range. I have tried several others and have tossed them all.
