Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Taylor 1470 Digital Cooking Thermometer/TimerCustomer Review: not bad but be gentler than usual Summary: 3 Stars
this thing works.
if you need lab precision there are other place s to go to.
if you need something to tell you
if you are looking at 80F or 120 F
this is the cheap way to go.
tea does taste better at about 200F and not 212F
pls note..
ok its not a brick
its not made in 1960
its made in china as we consumers have deemed it to be.
hence the affordability.
but
check out the manual and the design of this thing
its made by a bunch of people who are people
who care, and is wisely designed.
alarms for either TIME
or reach upto a certain pre set TEMP
are available
goes from 0 C to 200 C
good enuff for most things
if you need for experiments like me
to go from -100 C to 2000 C
you must look at lab grade stuff in hundreds of dollars friend.
but if you can get it landed
cost into your home for less than usd 33
its a useful thing to have around
for food or other measurements
in that range
oh
yes
i like that instant conversion with flick of
switch too.. between C and F
on back of machine tho, not front.
itsplasitc
so DONT put IN or outside hot stuff
will melt.
keep it some place a bit away
works.
good logical design
take care use wisely and gently
will serve you well
tks

Customer Review: Please don't waste your money! Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this Taylor Digital Cooking Thermometer based on a review from either Cook's Illustrated or America's Test Kitchen (I can't remember which!). I love to cook but don't really time things well, so I bought a "stick" digital read thermometer, but of course you have to take things out of the oven to get the temperature of the meat. I thought this product would solve the problem of repeatedly checking the temperature.
What a waste of money! I did everything the directions said. I tried it again and again. I put it in the closet. Today, I decided to try it again (don't know why!). I finally read all of the other reviews on Amazon re: this product. I wish I'd done better research.
Nothing ever worked on this thing. I first thought I kept doing something wrong but eventually gave up trying. The thermometer does not function properly and I had several of the problems other people have reported here - constant beeping, reading 338 degrees when I just put food into the oven, and then the ever-present "HI" where the temperature was supposed to be.
I think this product is junk. I have never reviewed anything else on Amazon. I usually love everything I get. Please let me know if you find something can do what this product promises to deliver. This product, however, is garbage!
Customer Review: Not as Good as Its Predecessor Summary: 2 Stars
Our old Taylor digital cooking thermometer/timer finally died, having been dropped once to often. It had lasted us a good many years, and the combined features of having a temperature probe and a timer just made sense. This was the only model like this we could find, and we loved our old one.
But, someone decided to save the company some money and cheap out on the temperature probe. The old one was made with a metal cord that you could close the over door on and have the main unit by the oven, and could withstand temps up to 500 degrees in the oven. The new temperature probe's cord is made of plastic or teflon and is only rated to 292 degrees, which is NOT in the online description. (Who the hell only cooks to that temperature, anyway?) We tried to use our old probe, but it didn't work properly with the new unit and we overcooked a fantastic cut of meat.
Also cheap: the glue holding the magnets to the back of the unit. We had this for less than a month before both magnets came off. Our old unit was in use for six years without having that happen even once.
The timer does work fine, but I wouldn't recommend this product for people who really like to cook and depend on a good quality product.
We are looking for a replacement.
Customer Review: Only if you like love / hate relationships. Summary: 2 Stars
The base unit is a fine thing, simple and easy to use, but (and I'm obviously not the first person to make this point) the probe is hopelessly fragile and the guarantee is gutless. When I first received one of these as a gift, it came with a supposed "lifetime guarantee." The first time it started malfunctioning I didn't realize the probe was at fault and I sent the whole thing back (postage at my expense), and received a replacement promptly. The second time it happened it was obvious that the probe was at fault, so I called Taylor rather than mailing it in and was told that the first replacement probe would be free but they would cost $5 each thereafter. Already the "lifetime guarantee" was being undermined. The third time it failed I mailed the whole unit back to Taylor because I wasn't willing to pay their $5 for just the probe. Again, they replaced the whole thermometer, but the new unit carries only a one year limited warranty. At thie point, more has been spent on postage for replacing faulty probes than was spent to buy the unit in the first place, and the original "lifetime" warranty has been effectively erased. On average, each probe has lasted for less than a year of occasional use. I would not buy one of these again.
Customer Review: Failed when needed most Summary: 1 Stars
We chose this thermometer because of features. We liked the termperature range for making candy and for oven cooking. We liked the alarm. We like that we could monitor temperatures without opening the oven but we specifically bought the themometer for monitoring the thanksgiving turkey. The Celsius/Fahrenheit switch wouldn't stay on Fahrenheit without tape. We followed the directions. At first the probe worked beautifully. After about three hours in the turkey, the probe began to misread by about 61 degrees. As many people know, 61 degree with meat is the difference between raw and dry. We were cautious and got an overcooked dry turkey. I would pay an extra ten dollars just to have a way to calibrate the probe for accuracy. To figure out how inaccurate the reading was, I allowed the probe to cool to room temperature. According to the probe this was around 140f. Then I put the probe in iced water. Iced water should approach 32f, however, the probe read between 98 and 96. Tell me this isn't a problem. We could have adjusted for the difference but we were already 4 hours into cooking the turkey and lost all confidence. We will try again thanks to Target return policies. We will also probably buy an analog backup just in case.
