Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Taylor 1456 Wireless Indoor/Outdoor Thermometer Large ReadoutCustomer Review: Excellent Wireless Thermometer Summary: 5 Stars
After having these the base monitor and remotes for just over 2 years, I have made my 2nd battery change. The temperature was still reading, but the main unit was not displaying the remote temperatures. I don't know if the main unit or remote units had weak batteries causing this problem - but I just replaced them all (base + 3 remotes) and it works flawlessly again. Great units! - Added 3/4/2010.
I'm adding a note after having had and used these for a year. They still work flawlessly and I have not had to change the batteries yet. I liked them when I got them - I like them even better now after having had them for a year and had perfect service from them! - Added 12/8/2008.
After a great deal of reading specifications and reviews, I bought this Taylor wireless remote with 2 additional remotes. Despite being about the cheapest, its reviews were good and it seems to be the only one with "weatherproof" remotes... why wouldn't all have that? Anyway, the company advises that the remotes be sheltered from direct rain, sun, etc. - apparently not TOTALLY weatherproof.
I began by checking the units lined up side-by-side to verify they all read the same temperatures. The widest variation between the Base Monitor and the 3 remotes was 0.4 degrees - close enough. I also checked against 2 good "analog" thermometers and the temperature was right with them, as well.
I found that the wireless range isn't as great as I would like it to be, but still respectable. My home has metal siding and that must affect the range a bit. After using the unit for a month, I'm really impressed with it.
The only downside is the 4 screws which need to be removed to replace batteries - and the weather seal MUST be CAREFULLY put back in place. After a month, I have not had to replace the 2 AA Energizer batteries in each of the units... supposedly they should last about a year. I would have liked a display on/off switch on the remotes - it doesn't seem necessary to have the temperature displayed on them and that would likely improve battery life a bit. On the other hand, I can see where, in some settings, it would be handy to look at the remote and see what the temperature is without going to the base unit - ergo, a switch would please everyone.
The base unit allows monitoring of up to 3 remotes by touching a button on top to display the readings of each one in turn. It would be nice if there were a mode to automatically cycle between the remotes. The temperature from the remotes is updated frequently - about every 2 minutes, I believe. The indoor and remote temperatures on the base unit are displayed with very large, easy to read numbers.
Overall, this seemed to me to be the best unit I could get and, surprisingly, at the best price, too! From my experience with it, I'd highly recommend it to anyone who doesn't need their remotes to be at a great distance from the base unit.
Another reviewer mentions having to recharge the batteries. I'd suggest not using rechargeables. Rechargeables will lose their charge even if they are not used - the charge deteriorating a bit every day due to the nature of the batteries themselves. For these units, the Energizers are affordable and should provide a long life without the hassle of switching and recharging batteries much more frequently.
Another reviewer mentions interference with cordless phones. I have cordless phones as well as cell phones and haven't had any problems.
