I read the negative reviews to see what they had to say. I just dont understand it. I own this product and it is sturdy, easy to use and sharp. It cuts great. I too was looking and looking for a good mandoline but couldnt find the right combination of quality, price and ease of use. The Swissmar Borner V-Slicer Plus fits the bill. I was at first concerned about it having only two thicknesses. For hamburgers, we use the thin side of the insert for onions and you can add a very thin slice or several thin slices. And for the tomatoes, just flip over the insert and cut them a little thicker.
You will be satisfied with this mandoline unless you are one of those people who have to be told "Dont touch that burner, its hot!", or "Dont touch that knife, it is sharp". Oh, really, I dont believe you, let me touch it anyway.
Yes, this is SHARP. But that turns out to be a really good thing when you want to cut something.
And by the way, there is virtually no waste with this model.

I've had mine for 20 years. It's as sharp as when I bought it! You **DO** have to be careful to use the holder! The only thing I've had to replace is the 'hat' holder. It's neat, takes up very little space on the counter, upon which it's *always* in reach. Once you start using it, you'll find more & more uses for it! I use it for just about everything. Super for evenly sliced or diced tomatoes, onions, potatoes, apples, oranges, HB eggs, etc.; the only problem I've found is if the tomatoes are very soft, towards the end they get mushy. Great for fine or thick julienned fruits, veggies & HB eggs - lettuce & cabbage go faster than you could ever cut them with a knife! French cut fruits & veggies are incredibly easy. I can't say enough good things about this unit. Worth every penny!!! I put my Couisinart in the cupboard shortly after getting this and can't recall getting it out for anything since!
Oh, the color is an off white, not what I'd call tan, if that's important to you, but it's so incredibly useful you'll want it out anyway.

I searched through many reviews of slicers on amazon and other sites and decided to go with this one. I love it. It makes fast work of slicing all kinds of vegetables. I use it to slice tomatoes and it does it so much faster than I every could and they are uniform thickness. As I'm getting ready for work in the morning I can slice 2 or 3 vegetables in no time and clean up is nice and quick.
If you need more variance than thick or thin, this isn't the slicer for you. You'll need one of the higher priced with the knob for that. For me, in the morning, I slice my cucumbers thin and tomatoes thick and it works great. Takes no time to flip the insert over to switch between them.
I use this for many things. It's great for slicing potatoes for stew and just cooking. Since they are uniform they all get done at the same time.
**One Caveat: this blade is SHARP!!! I found out the hard way. I actually slice a little bit of the end of my finger off and didn't realize it until later as it is so sharp.

I wasn't sure how much I would actually use this product, but I really enjoy prepping my veggies with it. The blade is very sharp, the holder really grabs onto the vegetable and slices it to the very end. I also like the way that it all fits together into a nice compact package.
If I could change something about this slicer, though, it would be how securely all the pieces are stored. There are two slots on the back for the extra blades to be stored. If the slicer isn't kept totally upright, these blades can fall out. I feel that it's just a matter of time before I am the one who is sliced or julienned. I also wish that the holder that grips the vegetable or whatever you're slicing could be attached more securely during storage. It's obvious that this slicer was meant to be stored in an upright position, but I don't have a cabinet that is tall emough to store it that way, which is why I have these other issues. However, I consider them to be pretty minor when compared to the great performance of the slicer itself.

I purchased this mandolin slicer after seeing it on the Food Network. For the price, this is an excellent slicer. I know there are mandolins on the market for $200 or more but I don't have any need to spend more money. This slicer does everything I need.
Slice vegetables and fruits thick or thin. The holder protects your fingers from the sharp blade. The one tip to remember is that you don't want to overload the slicer. Keep the vegetable and fruit pieces manageable and you won't have any trouble keeping the slicer steady on the counter.
We have two young sons, so mixing up the presentation is important to keep them from getting bored. They like the large, thin vegetable slices for lunch as finger foods. We don't buy bagged salad kits anymore. Salad kits cost about $3-$4 per pound (most bags come in 9oz or 12oz sizes).
With this tool and the OXO salad spinner we have a wonderful salad in minutes.
