Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Swissmar Borner V-1001 V-Slicer Plus Mandoline 6 Piece SetCustomer Review: Best Kitchen Gadget Ever!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I come from Australia and I have been using the Borner V-slicer for over 25 years. It is easy to assemble, (the appropriate blade), easy at cleaning up, and doesn't use much storage space. The blades stay eternally sharp. My current one I have had for 18 years and is still razor sharp. I'm on my second Borner V-Slicer - and the only reason I bought the second one was because the original one was brown and orange, not because the blades dulled. (White looks so much better.) The hand guard is a must to use and is very easy and does not take any getting use to. As far as kitchen tools go, apart from a good set of knives, a blending wand and the Borner V-Slicer, you will not need any other tool in your kitchen to get every job done for any dish. I have made a gift of this tool to nearly everyone I know who loves to cook and entertain, (hence my recent purchases), and everyone loves it. What more is there to say? It is excellent value for money, not as pricey as some others, but certainly worth every cent. As I said, I have had my current one for 18+ years and it's still going strong and I use it frequently.
Customer Review: Efficient and versatile slicing and veggie processing Summary: 3 Stars
This is the second V-Slicer I've owned! I wore out the first one after 25 years of almost daily use. I am pleased with the design of the V-Slicer, it is stream-lined, quickly and easily cleaned, stays sharp after thousands of uses. I would recommend this item to any adult who makes salads with lots of vegetables, or prepares dishes with fresh vegetables. It cuts work time into a tiny fraction. The only remark I can make is: It does what the ads promise! No hype! I use this tool every day and sometimes more than once a day.
A caution about this product is the sharpness of the blades. In any home with children, it is crucial to store the V-Slicer out of a child's reach and according to the instructions. If stored properly, the principal blades are covered and protected, but the alternative 'julienne' blades are embedded in separate panels which are also stored on the unit, and although they are also 'covered' they can be removed and accessed fairly easily. If you respect the fact that this is a knife-like product and reserve its use for adult cooking it is a marvelous addition to any kitchen.
Customer Review: Not as Advertised - 7mm ( 9/32) insert not 10mm (3/8) Summary: 4 Stars
We had one of these for over 20 years and it finally cracked and became unusable. After checking the information on Amazon, which referred to the 3/8" insert (10mm), we place our order.
The instructions that were enclosed referred to the 10mm insert, which is used for french fries, but the large julienne insert supplied is only 7mm, which makes shoe string fries, which are not to our liking and difficult to fry as they tend to lump together.
We contacted the importer and were informed the change had been made some time ago but they did have some 10mm inserts and would send us one for $6.00 plus shipping.
We now have the 10mm insert and have made our fench fries. This model works as well as the original and has a better handle on the slicer, however the safety grip is a a little awkward compared to the original.
For the price, even including the cost of the extra blade, it works as well or better than many of the far more expensive alternatives on the market.
I would give it 5 stars if it had the 10mm blade as standard.
Customer Review: I bought four! Summary: 5 Stars
This is an amazing product. I bought one on sale at a local store and loved it so much I went back and bought three more for my "gift" closet. The blades are sharp and I am glad about that. Would you want a V-Slicer with dull blades? I didn't think so. I have had mine for over a year and it is great. I keep it out on the cabinet and it is so easy to grab for big or small jobs. It isn't great for soft foods but it is great on everything else. I wouldn't be without it. I use my Kitchenaid chopper for a lot of things too but this is great for slicing and having things be a uniform size. It is great when I am making mashed potatoes. I slice them and they cook quickly and it only takes a minute to get them ready. It was heaven during my Thanksgiving prep with all the chopping and slicing I had to do. I did cut my finger one night when I wasn't being careful but that was my error. I have cut myself with knives and kitchen sissors before by being careless, it's the same thing. For the price I couldn't believe this was so great. You will love it.
Customer Review: A Great Value and Safest to Use Summary: 5 Stars
I have extensively used both a Bron Mandoline and a Borner V-slicer at work. I bought a V-slicer to use at home. I love the design of the Borner guard. It has long metal spears with a plunger to advance the food as you slice that give a very secure grip and almost no waste. Most of the cheaper slicers have short plastic points that really can not get a good grip on the food. The carriage style guard on the Bron is clumsy and not as flexible as the Borner. If the guard on a slicer is difficult to use people will tend to try to use it without. Unfortuately if you do that sooner or later you too will have a grisly story to tell. I also like the design of the holder that comes with to safely store the slicer and the two julienne blades. A slight drawback to the Borner is not being able to adjust the thickness of the slices beyond the two choices they give you. Also the V-slicer does not do crinkle or waffle cuts but Borner does make a separate crinkle/waffle cutter and also a smaller julienne slicer that work with the guard that comes with the V-slicer.
