Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Swissmar Borner V-1001 V-Slicer Plus Mandoline 6 Piece SetCustomer Review: Cumbersome, hard to use, poorly designed Summary: 1 Stars
I have wasted a ton of food and risked major injury trying to use this!
First off, the thing has no legs so you have to prop it over a bowl or hold it with one hand while you slice with the other hand. This does not provide a secure platform for slicing, dicing, etc. and I end up with uneven slices.
The safety food holder does not slide easily nor does it do a good job of holding the food. So my zucchini, etc. slips and slides all over the place while I'm trying to cut the vegetables and avoid maiming myself on those blades.
And the only way to control the slice thickness is by the amount of pressure applied, unlike other mandoline assemblies that use dials. So between holding the blade assembly in one hand while trying to negotiate the cumbersome, poorly designed food safety holder in the other, I find it impossible to maintain an even pressure on the food and end up with all sorts of different thicknesses.
I've used this primarily to (try to) create paper-thin slices of zucchini for raw vegetarian lasagna. It's been a huge failure. I've ended up with 60% of the zucchini ruined - uneven slices, wasted chunks, torn slices. What a mess and what a disappointment! I wish I hadn't bought the thing!
Customer Review: Love It!! Summary: 5 Stars
I ordered this product after reading all the positive reviews on Amazon and wasn't disappointed. It's a great product. Easy to use. The veggies slice very easily, no pushing and grunting as I did with another slicer I purchased earlier and returned. It's amazingly sharp and well designed so things slice quite effortlessly. I use it all the time for salad ingredients. I do carrots, fennel, onion and mango a couple of times a week for salad. My husband has used it many times for potatoes to make french fries. The only thing I had to be careful of was that if you are using the handle/pusher thing, you have to watch that you don't push the metal prongs into the blades as you are nearing the end of your slicing as your vegetable gets smaller and smaller. Actually, sometimes I use a fork if I only have a little piece of vegetable left and just push on it lightly, or just cut the rest up with a knife. All the pieces of the slicer fit into the container to stand on the counter and won't shake loose. I had looked at expensive stainless steel ones around $100 and thought I would have to buy that to have something work decently, but the V-slicer proved me wrong. It's great! It's not often I am impressed with kitchen gadgets either, most are a disappointment.
Customer Review: Borner V-Slicer is GREAT! Summary: 5 Stars
Ever feel like kitchen gadgets are so overpriced?! Well, this is one item that is worth far more than what you pay! I gave this to my husband for Christmas and I am afraid I will never be able to top that gift.
We wash it in the dishwasher about 1/2 of the time. The rest of the time we have to wash it by hand because we want to use it AND haven't had a chance to run the dishwasher since we last used it.
At first I imagined we would use it occasionally. I was wrong---we use the V-Slicer all of the time. We use it for potatoes (hash browns and french fries); carrots, celery, and onions (stir fries, salads, and soups); and we've even sliced apples using it for a decorative dessert topping.
The thin slicer blade slices SO things so thin, it's almost rediculous! You would never be able to do such a precise job with a knife (and you can slice your food so much faster).
Warning: Treat it like the dangerous object that it is (or you'll learn the hard way).
I also bought an extra thin julienne blade, but we've only used it once. The blades that come with the slicer will do just about everything you could ever want.
It's such a hit in our household, I'm giving it as a gift for mother's day.
Customer Review: Handy Kitchen Aid Summary: 4 Stars
This little slicer is very handy kitchen aid. It slices quickly and cleanly. The blades are VERY SHARP, so care is needed when utilizing. This thing has the ability to quickly and cleanly remove a finger. It suits its purpose; however, I quickly noticed that this particular model does not have a slicer stand. You must hold the slicer diagonally with one hand while slicing with the other. It's not a HUGE inconvenience, but I'd prefer the model with the stand that opens up from the rear. The 2 different blades included, offer a "thin cut" and a "thick cut". The "thin cut" blade was awesome for slicing. Perfect thin slices of onion, cucumber, and tomatoes for deli sandwiches and salads. However, my son is the french fry King, and the "thick cut" julienne blade produced cuts that I consider very thin (the image of the potatoes in the bowl are the result of the thick blade). I wish the blades were adjustable as with the Mandoline Pro or there were different blade options available for purchase.
I also haven't been able to figure out how to shred and dice. I do love the slicer and its ease of use, but I think I'll need to upgrade to the Pro for the extra $10 and see everything this tool has to offer.
Customer Review: Love this thing! Summary: 5 Stars
I've never really been in to kitchen gadgets, but I do cook a lot of vegetables and get sick of constantly chopping and slicing for stir-fry and steamed veggies. I just got this Mandoline this evening and have done a lot of experimenting. I julienned a few potatoes both thick and thin. I also sliced an apple and an orange. I also sliced a few zucchinis for dinner.
I am so impressed with this gadget! It slices evenly which means all your slices are cooked through at the same time. The thin julienne potatoes were amazing in their uniformity of shape and size. I normally allow 30 minutes to make sauteed zucchini, 10 of that to properly cut the vegetables. Tonight I sliced up 3 in about 5 minutes. It saved me so much time, my veggies were ready before the chicken. All the cuts for vegetables look very, very nice. The presentation is very professional looking when you use this slicer.
It is a little medieval and scary looking, but if you're careful and always use the veggie holder that comes with it you should be fine. As far as cleanup, it's just a quick rinse under hot running water and then return it to the holder, that couldn't be easier. I foresee myself using this daily for pretty much every meal.
