Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Swissmar Borner V-1001 V-Slicer Plus Mandoline 6 Piece Set

Customer Review: handy and quick
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this product to see if I would use a mandolin often enough to warrant buying a good professional model. I love this little gadget. I have seen some bad reviews here. I noticed some of the same problems but only when I was using the device improperly. The pusher has arrows on it as long as they are lined up correctly most if not all of the cutting issues disappear. I have no idea why it makes a difference but it really does make a one. It makes quick work of french fries (one of the reasons I bought it). I have used it on many batches of both french fries and potato chips. I have noticed you need to be careful of how much pressure you apply to it when cutting. Too much pressure and it bogs down cutting wise. I do not get very much waste as some folks have said. Though the couple of times I used it with the arrows in the wrong position I did get waste. Clean up is very quick. Only takes a rinse and it is good to go. It takes up only a very tiny amount of counter space. Just put it over a bowl and cut away. I would definitely recommend using it over a bowl when cutting. It has cut out areas that help it stay on the bowl. It is VERY sharp ... all mandolins are. Care must be taken when using any razor sharp implement. NEVER use it without the pusher.. well unless trips to the ER are fun for you :).

Customer Review: Not just another quick sell gimmick....
Summary: 5 Stars

When I first saw the V-Slicer, it was at the State Fair. As with most quick sell get rich items at the fair, I was very skeptical that this kitchen 'tool' would truly deliver results time and time again.

I've now owned the V-slicer (plus additional inserts) for 2+years and it's as amazing as the day I saw it at the fair. It's still razor sharp and very easy to clean (just wash with water).

The V-slicer is great for slicing anything and almost everything. It does wonders on tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers, celery, onions, apples, and much more. I particularly like to slice up some nice thin hash browns and season them up for breakfast on Sunday mornings.

On top of it all, the price of the V-slicer cannot be beat. I've scene similar products selling for $50 - $100+ and I can help but think those are ridiculously over priced. Sure they're made of steel, but this V-slicer is a solid very sturdy plastic that maintains stability while slicing and allows for very simple clean up.

One word of caution, the blades are SHARP! Again, after 2 years, they're still extremely razor sharp.

The V-slicer has proved to be one of the most useful and least expensive tools we use in our home kitchen. For the price and usefulness, you won't be disappointed.

Customer Review: I like it better than my old Benriner
Summary: 5 Stars

I loved my old Benriner. My my old Benriner had two problems that really bugged me: one was that the veggie holder to protect the hands was AWFUL. I mean, it was a JOKE. Seriously. The other thing is that the mandoline itself was too narrow for slicing something as common as onions (very annoying).

I was REALLY nervous about ordering this one. I could not tell for sure just how wide it is because the dimensions given were for "in the box" -- and I didn't expect much of the hand protector after reading a lot of the reviews here.

Now I got my V-slicer Plus and I LOVE it. The hand protector may not be PERFECT but it is a hundred times more useful than the little nearly-flat thing that came with my old Benriner -- the mandoline itself, out of the box, is just short of 4 inches width for slicing, but that extra 1/2-1" makes a BIG difference.

Lastly, I do love the way it slices, I WILL use the hand protector a LOT - (yea!!!) - and I'm thrilled with the little box in which I can store it, making it much SAFER in storage than my Benriner ever was. And by the way, I DO like the Benriner, which I would give 4 stars -- but this one is 5 stars in my book! As a raw foodist this will make food preparation MUCH more fun and creative for me now too.

Customer Review: Great product
Summary: 5 Stars

This thing does so well I keep looking for new things to use it on. Out of the package, it seems like a mostly plastic, cheap product. And it is, but it does the job well. I'm sure the blades will wear out eventually, and when they do I'll just toss it and buy another. But for the last two months I've been using this thing on potatoes, carrots, cabbage, onions, and some other things. But mostly potatoes and cabbage. It shreds cabbage beautifully. Makes great hash brown potatoes, or potato slices. I haven't tried to make the "french fry" cut but it is supposed to do that as well. It's amazing how easily this thing cuts, at least right now while it is fairly new.

Clean up is easy, I rinse it off and use a soapy sponge on the flat surfaces, being careful to avoid the blades. The water rinse takes care of most of the work. If you used it on something that stained a lot like beets or tomatoes, you might need to put more work into cleaning it. But I found if you rinse it fairly soon after using it, there isn't much to cleaning.

Overall, I'd recommend this without hesitation. I read some reviews on other slicer/mandoline products and usually saw common complaints. This one seems to have a design that is easy to use without much fuss.

Customer Review: Amazing Results Thanks to the Internet
Summary: 5 Stars

Having been a home cook my entire life, with some restaurant experience as a sous chef and above average knife skills, but disappointed with the slicing capabilities of a couple of different (electric) food processors, I purchased, over the years, two different mandolines - the first (brand forgotten) was a waste of time and landed in the scrap heap. Recently, I decided to try a mandoline once more but before I purchased anything I read various user reviews on Amazon and decided on the Swissmar Borner V-Slicer which is not, to my knowledge, available locally. Well, I must say I was astonished when the product arrived - the knife-studded contraption filled me with dread so before attempting to use it I once again turned to the internet - this time to view a how-to video on YouTube (highly recommended!). Within moments, and with great care, I decided to finely slice one large Yukon Gold potato for Pommes Anna, an elaborate French preparation requiring slices as thin as potato chips - and I was not disappointed. The Swissmar exceeds all expectations - in seconds I sliced a very large beautiful mound of perfectly thin potatoes, without any effort, without any difficulty, without any danger. I am amazed. And all for $37 bucks. If you love to cook, this is The One.
