Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Swissmar Borner V-1001 V-Slicer Plus Mandoline 6 Piece Set

Customer Review: Over 15 years of use and still works like a charm
Summary: 5 Stars

I have had my V-slicer for over 15 years and it still works as good as the day I took it out of the box. With no special treatment and sometimes abusing it the blades are still sharper than ever. I put them in the dishwasher sometimes and sometimes I just wash them myself. I just recently bought another slicer that is almost similar in look and design but not the same as I couldn't find this one in the store. What a mistake. I have come to appreciate some of the features that make this one special. 1) The blades are situated so that most of your food will be sliced or chopped unlike some others that sit lower. Use your food holder and you don't have to worry about cutting yourself. 2) The easy pop in and out of the various slicers is not to be taken for granted. Others require way more effort to change out the blades. 3) The small chopping blade which I frequently use for onions works effortlessly. Well on other brands if it works at all it destroys half the onion and is quite hard to push through. I would never have thought it could be different until I saw if for myself. 4) The cleanup and storage is so easy. I put mine in a drawer lying flat and can whip it out and within a minute have anything I want chopped, sliced or diced.

I know this sounds like I work for this company but I don't. It's just a fabulous product and deserves the 5 stars. I am a lazy cook and this simple gadget does the trick without electricity or too much fuss.

Customer Review: UnBeatable Quality
Summary: 5 Stars

I got this slicer 6 months ago, because I teach regular cooking classes and I wanted to give people an easier, more simple way of prepping juilenne vegetables that was still affordable. Now as a professionally trained chef, I've used the $150-200 mandolines in the kitchen, and I'm starting to like this slicer better. First of all, the blade and attachments are super sharp, even after months of serious use. Second, the hand guard is made well enough to grip most vegetables, where as some I've used either don't have a hand guard, or don't have deep enough prongs to hold on to the food (this would make it a pain to actually try and cut something because the food keeps falling off, or, potentially even dangerous). It is slightly difficult to clean, because of all the groves. But, handwashing with dishwashing brush (Good Grips makes a good one), make it a little easier. Like most plastic things it will stain a lovely beet or carrot color, but that seems to be the industry standard. PLEASE BEWARE, the blade really is sharp. The one time I failed to use the hand guard,I nicked my finger slicing zucchini. Fortunately, since it is sharp, there was no pain (I almost didn't notice I cut myself) and required only a bandaid. I should have taking the severe warning from my teachers, use a towel or a handguard, but never your bare fingers. Unless you don't want your fingers anymore!!!!!!!!

Customer Review: Awesome
Summary: 5 Stars

All I can say is this thing is awesome. I hate cooking, I hate cutting, I hate making a mess. At first I thought this thing was a gimmick, but ended up buying it anyways. I told my wife I was going to order this and she laughed at me because she knows I hate cooking. After I ordered the item, I told a friend and he laughed at me too. He said he had a different version (No Name Brand) and the thing was a piece of junk, not even sharp after two months. Well I have had mine for two years and still love it and still just as sharp. I have no idea what I would do without this and that is coming from a guy who hates cooking. The only time I will cook is when I know I can use the slicer to cut something. It is easy, makes great cuts and clean up is a snap. Even if I am just making a blt, I use the slicer to cut the tomato. I love it so much I ordered another one to have downstairs by the bar for cutting lemons and limes.
I bought mine through the gadget store on Amazon. If you are even debating on getting one, just buy it and try it. If you don't like it the gadget store has a great return policy. Trust me you won't return it. I received my order in about two days and as soon as I opened the box there were detailed instructions on what to do if you don't like the item.
I don't write reviews or even get this goofy over items, but this one was worth ever penny.

Customer Review: View from a former salesman

...

Here are some of the distinctions that you might not notice from a distance.

First off, it is a great slicer. The parts fit together securely and it feels like quality. It's made in Germany and has a stainless steel blade, which does eventually get dull. It can be sharpened, but it's a little awkward.

Just because you haven't cut yourself with a knife for years, doesn't mean that you're safe with this tool. The cutting action with this tool is distinctly different from using a knife. Take my advice and use the safety handle... even when you think you don't need it.

I remember cutting an orangeonce; my hands were wet... the blade hit a seed and my hand slipped. In a flash I had cut half way through the tip of my index finger. The good news is that it was a really clean cut and healed within a week, but I learned my lesson.

You have two different sizes of julianne cuts. One is nice for french fries, the other is more like shoestring potatoes. There are also two different thicknesses of slices.

If you want to make some quick diced tomatoes or salsa, just make a few cross-cuts on a tomato (after placing it into the safety handle) and then run it through the larger julianne blade.

I imagine that you will be happy with your purchase if you chose to get one. I gave everybody a satisfaction guarantee, and only had one come back, from someone who was just scared to use it.

Customer Review: Returned it after 2 uses
Summary: 2 Stars

I know I am a minority here, but I just want to share w/ everyone my 2 cents. This gadget obviously doesn't work for me. I bought it because of all the great reviews. I cook daily and I fequently julienne vegetables like carrots, zuchini, daikon turnips by hand and it's not my favorate part of cooking. The first time I used the V-slicer I was trying to cut carrots into match-stick sizes (juliennes). The red carot juice stained the white plastic board right away and despite immediately rinsing and washing w/ detergents it wouldn't come off. I didn't try bleach because I can't imaging using bleach on food related items. The blades are really sharp, but as I worked to process the veggies it made a huge mess - I had to use a giant bowl below to catch the "debris", and I almost cut myself when I tried to wipe the little food pieces off the board surface. I tried it a second time with some other vegetables and although the cuts looked good I just didn't think it's worth the time and effort to use it and clean up later (I cook for myself, so it's not very time consuming to do everything by hand). When I have company, I take out my food processor for large volumn processing. To me, the cleaning trouble is about the same for my food processor and the V-slicer. A good sharp knife is obviously the best investment if you have a very small family to feed.
