Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Swissmar Borner V-1001 V-Slicer Plus Mandoline 6 Piece Set

Customer Review: My scariest kitchen gadget
Summary: 3 Stars

I took time to think about this review and how many stars to give it. For five stars I think a product should cover all the bases, nothing superfluous, but at the same time nothing that seems standard on other models that is not on the one you have. It should also function perfectly. For starters I am in my kitchen constantly and love cooking and cutting. I figure that everything I buy will pretty much be used so often that I can essentially justify spending however much to get what I want, many have enough $ in stainless steel pots and pans and understand what i mean. This time I really wish I would have spent more. For starters other reviewers have stated this is sharp. Oh yes it is, I stopped paying attention (giving proper respect) for just a moment and got my thumb nail manicured without even feeling it. I was lucky. Problem is that when you have to clean this thing good luck!!! It is like tickling the blade with the edge of a sponge, you really can't clean this thing all to easily or safely. Huge problem because other models come with blades that are completely removable and allow for this. Part two of this problem is that it is white and stains so you do need to scrub it real well at times and i didn't run a beet over it until i knew i was upgrading. Surprisingly the beet didn't stain and so far I have found my nemesis to be carrots. When I was looking at upgrades I stumbled on models that had these great safety pusher handles that allowed you to do vegetables lengthwise and even better had spring loaded pushers that didn't force you to get the "feel" for how to push down on the vegetable yourself. Thats what I mean by 5 stars should have all the bells and whistles or come with a caveat "at this price" Also it only allows for basic cuts at 1/8th and 1/4 inch.

Customer Review: The Best Darn Slicer I have had !!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

My hopes were high that this would be the one that would DO what it says it will do after reading the reviews.. Well I am one happy Camper.. It DOES IT..
I have had this on my counter ever since it arrived in my home and have used this dozens of times. in the short time..

1. First let me say that the attention to detail on the product is SUPERIOR. You can throw out teh box as the instructions are embedded right on the Slicer Holder !!
2. The Safety features of the slicer not being able to be removed from the box until the latch is lifted makes me more comfortable leaving it out
3. All the parts STAY IN ONE PLACE.. even the safety handholder has it secured spot on the holder box so parts don't get lost or thrown in some drawer never to be seen again
4. It slices like a DREAM... first items I used it on was onions.. wow nice even thin slices that are perfect for a sandwich or overtop a cooking steak The slices being even cooked the same time and browness.
5. I like apples so I tried this with thin sliced apples and made a dessert tray up in less than 10 minutes with sliced apples, oranges, pears and sliced cheese and added some nuts and my plate looked like the ones made at the Grocery Store.
6. I find I am looking for items to slice with it as it does such a nice job
7.Clean up.. What clean up??? Run it under the faucet and put it right back in its holder to dry.. NO MESS at all...

If I could give it a higher rating I would... This is one kitchen Item that I have NO REGRETS buying and would get another one ASAP if something happend to it ( like one of my relatives lifted it to take home heheheheh))))

I can't tell you how much of a treat this one is to use .. A Big THUMBS UP

Customer Review: JUST TERRIBLE (tongue in cheek)
Summary: 5 Stars

Well I'd love to be able to answer the standard questions a potential purchaser would have - but due to the design of this product I just cannot.

How is it to wash? No idea.....I start rinsing and it's already clean so I never get to try washing it.

How about storing it? No idea - I go to put it away and realize that I will need it again later today or first thing tomorrow etc and so there is no point putting it away and therefore I have no idea how it fits in my cupboard.

How about durability? No idea - I've had it for 6 years and I am waiting to be able to report on this but again....due to the design I have nothing to report other than some food staining from carrots. I will leave this in my will to my kids so maybe they can report on the blade getting dull someday so you can know about that.

So you see the problem. Also, this product is horrible for your health. I live in apple country and I can have apples ready for apple crisp/pie in under 2 minutes. This has had bad consequences for my waistline. Don't core, don't peel, just do 3-4 swipes per each of 4 sides on the apple with the large shredder and the little apple sticks are ready to go into the pie.

Seriously though - this thing is amazing - we use it all the time!!! Leave it out so it's there. What a blessing for onions - no more tears because it's all over so fast!

Of course I can also do vegetable soup just as fast as the apples for pie, so I guess I can't blame the slicer for the waistline......lol!

Get one, give one.....you or your gift recipient will be thrilled.

Customer Review: Slicing Onions w/ Borner -- Best Slicer since Sliced Bread ;-)
Summary: 4 Stars

I have to admit I was a bit skeptical when I first purchased the slicer, but I was SO sick of slicing onions whenever I wanted to cook with them that I took a $20 gamble and ordered the Borner.

Well, the gamble paid off because the thing works like a charm! The blades are sooo sharp, which makes cutting easy but dangerous if you don't follow the directions closely. I know everyone says this but they're not exaggerating. Be careful!

I only use one attachment at one setting to create onion slices. I will slice up an onion or two at a time and put everything I don't use sealed tightly in the fridge. Using it in slice/onion ring mode is good because then you can chop the onion slices however you want or need for a recipe. Cooking dinner on a weeknight is quicker now because I have my onions pre-sliced by the Borner. I only like to pre-slice once per week because I find it difficult/dangerous to clean. You have to hand wash it, so make sure you have a brush or something so your hands keep away from the blades. I let it air dry so the blades don't cut up my towels (yes, it's that sharp!).

I only find the Borner useful for onions. I've tried it for slicing other things but found it more of a hassle than just using a knife. I find it difficult/dangerous to change the attachments all of the time so I prefer to keep it in one configuration. Call me paranoid, but I find it safer this way.

So my advice: if you hate chopping onions, get the Borner! You won't be sorry.

Customer Review: Hard to Handle
Summary: 2 Stars

This slicer is very difficult to use with any speed. The "food safety holder" is the major pitfall. It's large and unwieldy--and very hard to use with any foods that don't actually fit up inside the center of it.The pins can't get far enough into the food to get a good grip because of the big round guard. With long veggies like yellow squash or zuccini, you only get 2-3 slices before you hit the holder and the food falls off. You can cut the vegetable into smaller pieces that fit up inside the holder, but this makes long slices impossible. (I like to julienne squash/zuccini lengthwise to substitute for pasta in low-carb cooking.) Once you cut it to fit in the holder, the pieces are too short to use as noodles. It would be much nicer (and safer) if the holder consisted of only of a small round grip, without the large frame around it--you could get a good grip on food and keep your fingers up and away from the blades without having to constantly readjust, push down, or keep re-stabbing the food. I think they added the wide guard for safety purposes, but when the food almost immediately falls off and your hand goes sliding down without it, it's actually more dangerous. It is also very difficult to keep over a bowl for the food to fall into. It slides around and slips off the bowl rim, which can also be a little dangerous for the fingers. It makes nice uniform cuts, but because of the holder and lack of grips for staying on the bowl, I can work faster and safer with a good sharp chef's knife.
