Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Sweater Stone

Customer Review: Works great, depending on the fabric weave and content
Summary: 4 Stars

I ordered the Sweater Stone with two items in mind: a wool-blend sweater given to me for Christmas, and a twill futon cover. Both were lesser-quality items, and both badly pilled (the sweater looked terrible after just 3 wearings). The Stone worked great on the tightly woven twill fabric - it removed all the little pills and left the fabric looking like new. The sweater was another story. The large pills were removed, but the areas I "Stoned" just got fuzzy all over - leaving a sort of nappy brushed look which further stoning did not eliminate. The more I brushed, the more fiber came off, but the stitch definition never came back. Given wool's natural tendency to felt under friction, I'm not surprised. It's not the fault of the stone, but of the fibers and their poor quality. I do recommend this product, especially for tightly woven fabrics, but be aware that while it removes pills, it may not restore stitch definition on some sweaters and may change the surface appearance.

Customer Review: Great product
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased several sets of flannel sheets from various different places, most of them did not begin to pill untill this year. I really hate rough sheets and tried the battery operated defuzzers on the sheets, it helped some but still not soft. So I saw the review on the sweater stone and thought I had nothing to lose by trying it. It arrived promptly and I immediately tried it out. It works. You do need to do several swipes over the sheets to remove all the pills, the results are soft cozy sheets again. The only thing is I wish it were more the size of a board eraser as you could cover more area when you use it. It does slip out of my hands and I scrape my finger pads on it, but it is worth it. To remove the pills I put the bottom sheet on and depill it and then I use a lint brush to remove the access fuzz after I determine that it is soft enough I put the top sheet on and depill it. I don't know if the sheets will pill up when I wash them as I haven't done that yet.

Customer Review: works great! I included some tips.
Summary: 4 Stars

I actually did not buy this exact product, but tried a pumice stone I had at home from a pedicure kit. This worked great! However, some tips:
- do it over a hard floor, like linoleum, since you will create a lot of pilling and this makes it a lot easier to clean up. I just did a quick sweep afterward, no problem.
- use the edge of the pumice stone, like a blade. MUCH more efficient than using the flat surface.
- wear the sweater, and pull the fabric taut. This helps A LOT. It's hard to do with the sweater just in your hands. To do the back of the sweater, just put it on backwards.
- not only does this remove pilling, but it restores the texture and appearance of the whole sweater. As someone who wears a lot of wool and cashmere, I highly recommend this! It's not nearly as difficult or time-consuming (at least for me, using the above techniques) as some of these reviews say!

Customer Review: Sweater Stone
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought the sweater stone to remove the fabric pilling on my cotton mattress, caused by a blue set of sheets. While the sweater stone didn't remove the largest pills, all of the smaller ones came up and created a big pile of fabric. I used another reviewers advice and applied firm but gentle pressure - any more pressure would have torn my mattress. I had to go over the same spot multiple times, but only because I was so careful so that I wouldn't put a hole in my mattress. I also stopped after every few strokes to remove the collected fabric off of the stone - also a tip from another reviewer. The majority of the fabric that came up was blue, meaning it wasn't just tearing the fabric off of the mattress, just the pilling from the blue sheets. I've never liked electric fabric shavers, so I was excited to try this product. Overall, I'm very satisfied.

Customer Review: Better than a shaver!
Summary: 5 Stars

I am actually writing this review based on using the sweater stone my mother bought years and years ago. After moving away from home, I missed hers so much I am buying my own. Just gently rub it across the surface of pilled fabric, and it restores a smooth newer look. This works much better than any sweater shavers I've tried and will last for years with no batteries required. Consumer Reports also gave it a "Best Buy" rating.

I will add that it does have a slight odd odor while you use it, but that does not affect the clothes. You also will want to use a lint roller to collect pills and lint once you're done. I've had one synthetic stretchy sweater it didn't work on, but it's been great on most things, including pilly sheets.
