Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Sunbeam 6131 Hot Shot Hot Water Dispenser, Black

Customer Review: Outstanding gift for college bound student...
Summary: 5 Stars

Can't boil water? The Sunbeam Hot Shot will ensure the survival of even the most inept young adult - yes, all it does is boil about 2 cups of water, but that is what the kids need. Make your coffee, tea, hot cocoa, ramen, mac & cheese...without the size and complication of a microwave and without the danger of the traditional hot pot.

I've given these as gifts to graduating high school seniors for several years now; throw in a few bucks for the ramen and now the kids will eat for a month! Also, I've checked many college websites for prohibited items, and have never found the Hot Shot on any list. You should of course do your own checking before sending any item off to college.

For the $, this is an excellent appliance; it lasts a long time if used as recommended. I've had mine for 5 years, no problems. Coffee, made fresh every time with a Melitta cone filter - delicious! Buy one now!!

Customer Review: Great product, if a little short.
Summary: 4 Stars

The product specs listed for this gadget are incorrect in that it doesn't weigh 24 pounds. It is a great hot water heater/dispenser, if a little short. While you're easily able to dispense water into coffee mugs, it won't accept a larger mug or insulated/travel sort of container. I keep a small measuring cup in it to use to transfer water into my larger-than-normal mugs and travel cups and that works fine. You'll be impressed with how quickly and evenly it heats water and then shuts itself off. Very handy and takes up very little space. Much more efficient than the three minutes it would take in the microwave. Be careful if you order the black version as I have bought two of them and one leaked, persistently and badly! The white one that I bought has performed very well with no leaks. Make sure and test it out as you don't want to have scalding-hot water dripping out of the thing and all over your counter top.

Customer Review: Perfect fit for my purpose
Summary: 5 Stars

I wanted to find something that would let me quickly heat water for tea once or twice a day. The hot water dispensers that hold liters seemed like overkill, so I thought I'd try this. I've had it for about a year now, so I thought I'd write up a review.

Heating time for water is just short of 2 minutes. There is about 4 1/2 inches of space under the pour spout in which to put a cup or mug, which is plenty of room for the vast majority of cups or mugs. Other reviewers have said theirs leaks, in a year of use, mine has not.

The only thing I might be critical of is that it doesn't quite drain all of the water when you dispense. However, I haven't found that the leftover water gets messy or funky or anything (it has been heated to boiling, so nothing will grow in it if you leave the lid closed until you add more for the next cup).

Customer Review: Does what others don't --speedy and elegantly simple
Summary: 5 Stars

Yeah, there's dozens of alternatives from little pots to one-cup coffeemakers but none have the simplicity or speed of this gadget. You just fill your coffee mug with water(one or two cups), pour it in, press the back button and wait 30 sec. (much faster than a MWave), press the bottom button and boiling hot water flows into your cup or bowl which you've had 30 secs to fill with coffee, tea bag or instant food. All with ONE hand.
This is the forth one Iv'e owned -- they last about 10 years each before the thermostat goes bad --but by that time you'll want a newer-looking one anyway. Highly reccommend and have bought several as gifts. Amazon had a good price, too.
Only negative: If you want more than two cups, you must wait a minute or so for the thermostat to cool down. This can be speeded up by pouring fresh cold water back in right away.

Customer Review: Disappointed
Summary: 1 Stars

I received a Sunbeam Hot Shot as a wedding gift 21 years ago and have used one since. It gets used everyday approx 4-5 times. I have replaced my original one, maybe once or twice in the course of 21 years and have been very happy with the product.

My current one is approx 10 years old and is starting to take longer to boil water so I ordered one of these. The first time I filled it up with water all the water came pouring out of it. The spring that closes off the water from coming out isn't working properly. I can push it down but it doesn't stay down. The cup area (top to bottom) seems to be a bit smaller as well. Needless to say, I just returned it and plan on picking up some other brand's water heater that I can return to a store if necessary vs. being charged postage and tracking to send the item back.
