Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Sunbeam 6131 Hot Shot Hot Water Dispenser, BlackCustomer Review: Excellent product for tea drinkers Summary: 5 Stars
I drink tea all day long, and have used Hot Shots to prepare my tea water for more than 10 years. I've even purchased them to take into the kitchen at work so that I can get the truly boiling water that you need to make a good cup of tea. (If you're a tea purist, you know that the beverage that's made by dragging a tea bag through warm water is *not* tea!) It's faster than either a microwave or a kettle on the stove.
The answer to the problems described in the last couple of reviews is simple. In order to warm the correct amount of water for the mug you are using, fill the Hot Shot using that same mug. Simple and foolproof.
As for the comments about leaking or the reservoir becoming "gross" when you leave water in it, the instructions specify that you must not leave water sitting in the reservoir. I believe the reason is that in areas with hard water, lime deposits will build up and the plunger that holds the water in will no longer have a tight seal.
The average life of my Hot Shots has been 4-7 years, with each being used 5-15 times per day. It's a great product.
Customer Review: Hot Indeed! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this item a month ago and have used it several times a day since then.
What I like about the unit is:
Fast heat up time
True boiling temperature that is achieved.
Water is held in reservoir until you press dispenser (old unit was a steady drip type that if you failed to center your cup could be an unpleasant mess)
What I don't like but can happily adapt to and live with:
Care must be taken to avoid even a hint of overfilling as when the water starts boiling it will raise the lightweight plastic lid up and splutter boiling water everywhere.
No way to shut off unit once it's started short of pulling the plug, sparks and all.
What I learned:
Always start with cool water.
If you have overfilled and it begins is splutter, carefully press the dispenser button and let a small amount of the water out of the reservoir into your cup. Then allow it to complete it's cycle before you dispense the rest.
All in all, for the money and convenience factors, it's an excellent little work horse.
Customer Review: Gets the Job Done, but. . . Summary: 4 Stars
This unit gets the job done, but it is not as well conceived as some previous Hot Shot models. The new water reservoir is not as concave as on elder models, and it is impossible to drain the water completely via the dispense button. If you have hard water, and/or plan to use the unit infrequently, you may share my frustration over the small amounts of standing water. The new design is also shorter than all of the previous Hot Shot models I have owned. It no longer accepts a standard 2 cup glass measure without the need to cant the cup diagonally past the pendant spout. This becomes very meaningful when the cup is filled with boiling water. That said, the new unit heats as well as previous models, and the price point is very attractive. In addition, the new non-adjacent heat and dispense buttons have done away with potential button errors by younger family members. Despite its present shortcomings, I am still inclined to purchase future Hot Shots (or even another 6131, should something untoward happen to my present unit at home). The convenience and price far outweigh the design flaws.
Customer Review: Best little one cup water heater dispenser Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this Sunbeam 6131 Hot Shot water dispenser for my mother. She's 87 and lives alone. We worry all the time that she will put her teapot on the stove and walk away and forget about it potentially causing a fire if it over heats.
This is a great alternative to the teapot or microwave. You fill your cup with water from the tap and pour this measured amount into a holding pan on top of the unit. Put the empty cup in the indented space on the bottom of the Hot Shot and press down on the left "HEAT" button on the front. The coil under the holding pan starts to heat up instantly. Be careful because in about 30 seconds you have piping hot water. Now press down on the "DISPENSE" button to the right of the "HEAT" and fill your cup. Only 2 buttons to deal with. My mother loves it and I love it because I know it's safer than the teapot and stove.
Besides coffee, it's great for tea, hot chocolate and for college students, romen noodles in a cup.I highly recommend the Sunbeam 6131 Hot Shot. It comes in both black & white finish. For some reason the white cost $5 more on Amazon.
Customer Review: Sending it back Summary: 1 Stars
I've had the old design for many yrs and it always worked well, howver its stating to drip a little when I pour the water in,,its no big deal but I figured it served me well for all these yrs that I would just get a new one. Well the new one was delivered two days ago and its going back. First off,,I don't overfill it and when the water finally comes to a boil it sometimes will spill over. I say finally because the old unit never took as long as the new one. There's also so much steam that escapes I was afraid to place it near anything,,the old one hardly allowed any steam to escape. The unit gets condensation on it also and the dispenser takes twice as long as the older model. I placed them side by side and poured the same amount of water in each and I'm telling you the older model is so much better that I'm just going to continue using it until it breaks. I can't find any of the old model at any site. My advice is to wait and see if Sunbeam realizes the flaws in the new model and attempts to correct them.
