Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Sunbeam 6131 Hot Shot Hot Water Dispenser, BlackCustomer Review: New Model Leaks Summary: 2 Stars
Sunbeam 6131 Hot Shot Hot Water Dispenser, Black
We have used a Hot Shot for many years, replacing the first two because they eventually stopped heating water sufficiently (only up to 160 degrees F). Since they had become a mainstay in our kitchen, used several times a day, we were eager to replace the last one, and ordered the sleek new black model, which is of a somewhat different design than the original.
The first one we received from Amazon leaked considerably if we didn't use up all the water that had been heated, so we sent it back (Amazon paid for the entire return postage and sent us a new one at no extra cost). The second one leaked just like the first one, through the dispenser spout, when water was left to sit in the heating chamber. We never had this problem with the older model.
I am giving it two stars instead of only one, since some people may not mind being sure to empty the heating chamber after each use. (If it didn't leak, I would give it 4 stars -- and 5 stars, if it were also tall enough to accomodate taller cups).
Customer Review: Very simple device that does what it's supposed to Summary: 4 Stars
This device features one button. This is not necessarily a good thing. To operate it, all you do is pour however much water you need into the top, and push the button to begin the heating process. However, if you push the button before you want to heat the water, there is no way to cancel the action, other than to unplug it. In addition, there is no time control or temp control. It's a "one size fits all" device. The default setting seems to be just right for most applications, like oatmeal or tea. The water is brought to just below boiling, and certainly does it much faster (about 15 seconds) than a microwave, as advertised. One tip, make sure to leave the top open when done. A small puddle of water is left at the bottom when drained, and this may become unsanitary if left closed for an extended period of time.
In the end, this device does exactly what it says, and does it well. While you can't stop the heating operation once it has started, you very rarely need to, and if you do, you can always unplug it. This device saves a lot of time, especially the precious minutes in the morning. I would highly reccomend this device to anyone who heats a lot of water.
Customer Review: VERY HOT Water in a Snap. A Little or a Lot ! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought two of these little guys! One for myself and one for my mother to use in the retirement center. The feature that put the Hot Shot head and shoulders above the rest is the front dispenser lever that allows the user to determine just how full you want your cup or mug! The Fire Marshal liked that it shut itself off when it was done heating and that it doesn't have a hot plate so there's no danger of items laying across the hot plate and becoming a potential fire source. Actually, it heats water so fast a hot plate would be redundant.
Other units that I looked at heat up and dispense ALL the water you put in the reservoir irregardless of the size of your cup or mug. This can result in VERY hot water overflowing the mug and flooding the counter! (Trust me, I had one of those units.) In these days of bottled water, it's an extra step to pour your water into your mug BEFORE pouring it into the machine. With these units it's your mug that serves as the "measuring cup" that you MUST use if you don't want to find yourself in a messy overflow situation!
It's not an all or nothing world - get the one with the lever! It puts YOU in CONTROL!
Customer Review: It works! Summary: 4 Stars
It's a good product. It heats water to almost-boiling in 50 to 60 seconds. That's what I needed!
When I first got this thing, I was kind of frustrated because I had to measure out the 16 ounces of water with a measuring cup, dump the water into the Hot Shot (it spilled), dispense the hot water into a heatproof cup (the dispenser lever hit the lip of the cup and wouldn't go down all the way), pour the water from the cup into the french press (it spilled), and then pour that into my thermal mug. But a week or two ago I bought a 2-cup Pyrex measuring cup and now I use that as a carafe. It's heat-proof, it measures, it pours without spilling and it fits in the Hot Spot. Easy! Plus, since I measure the water beforehand, I don't have to empty out extra water when I'm done using the Hot Shot. I just open the lid and let any moisture evaporate.
The Hot Shot should have much more clearance for taller cups (and small french presses, etc.), and I wish I didn't have to unplug it after each use, but it was so inexpensive that I really can't complain. Maybe it should come with a carafe! Now that I have the Pyrex cup I am much happier with the Hot Shot.
Customer Review: Exactly What I Needed! Summary: 5 Stars
Just received my Hot Shot today and had to try it immediately. I am so impressed! I had recently stopped drinking coffee and switched to tea, so I was using a kettle to heat the water. 10 minutes after it would finally boil, I had another 5 minutes of brewing...sigh...so then I tried to remember when I was half way done with the first cup to put the kettle on to boil again...see what I mean? So, now that I have tried the Hot Shot my kettle days are definitely over! I plugged it in and poured in 16 oz of water, which is all that it will hold. I turned it on and it boiled the water within one minute and then shut itself off. I dispensed the water for my tea, brewed and it was great. Now, for the cool thing. Directions say you must ALWAYS start the boil cycle with cold water so the thermostat can reset itself, but I still had another cupful of water in the pot. After I leisurely finished my first cup I checked the water in the Hot Shot and it was still very very hot, definitely hot enough to brew a second cup, which I did and am drinking right now. This may not be everyone's solution to quick hot water, but it really works for me and I love it!
