Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Sunbeam 5891 2-Pound Programmable Breadmaker, WhiteCustomer Review: Sunbeam 5891 Summary: 5 Stars
Thanks to the reviews I read here, I purchased the Sunbeam 5891. I was prepared to spend A LOT more on a bread machine and was VERY happy to spend less than $40.00 at Wal-Mart.
Well, I tried the machine Christmas morning for the first time and I was able to make a perfect loaf of whole wheat by following the simple directions. Dough rose perfectly, density is great, slices well and tastes great. I may have even turned my kids into whole wheat eaters.
I took the advice of others and did not use the recipe that came with the machine. Instead I bought the book by Donna R. German (Favorite Bread Machine Recipes). Honestly, this is not brain surgery. All I did was follow the directions and measured carefully.
For those who have not had success with this machine, I cannot, for the life of me, figure out where you went wrong.
To new users, follow the advice I received here. READ the manual, throw away the recipes that come with the machine, buy a new recipe book (like I mentioned above) pay attention to the kneading cycle so you can adjust the dough if necessary (this is important for all machines, not just this one) and enjoy excellent bread and spend the money you saved on something else.
Clean up is ridiculously easy. Unlike others, I have no issue with the LCD being dim or hard to read.
Good luck, buy this machine!
Customer Review: Great Bread Maker but NOT programable! Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this because it was inexpensive, had good reviews, and it stated that it was a "Programmable" breadmaker. Yes it does have factory set programs that you can alter a little but you cannot program it. I had two Breadman Ultimates prior to this. Those ARE programmable bread machines. You can program your own personal settings on those. But after going through two of them in a 3 year time span I got fed up and started to look for something cheaper seeing I was going through them so fast.
Well this one although not programmable has enough settings to get me where I need to go when making my homemade bread and it runs much smoother and quieter than both of the Breadman Ultimates I've owned. I've had it for 6 months now and use it VERY much. It still works like the day I first got it.
I really like the "Express Bake" settings. I can make a loaf of bread in 58 minutes and it comes out even better than my personal programmed setting I had with the Breadman Ultimates which took around a year of trial and error to get those setting dialed in. You can't go wrong with this bread maker. I only gave it 4 starts because I felt deceived as it states "Programmable" and it is not programmable. Like I stated earlier, you can change some of the already programmed setting but not much and that is not programming the machine. Nevertheless, GREAT bread maker, Highly Recommend!
Customer Review: Best Bread Machine EVER! Summary: 5 Stars
This bread machine is not only a great value, but has become invaluable in my kitchen! I have previously owned this exact model. I had purchased it from Wal-Mart for around $40 several years ago, however,I opted to give it to a friend who believed she had Celiac Disease. I was happy to help a friend, but I desperately missed the joys of baking fresh breads for my family. Luckily, my husband just surprised me with a brand new one from Amazon for my birthday!
I can not say enough positive things about this bread machine! Not only does it have oodles of options like the more expensive models, (Crust color, 13 bake choices, 1.5 and 2lb loaf settings) but it has a delay bake option, and does a wonderful little beep for add ins! It is also relatively quiet and a pretty standard size for a bread machine.
I have never had any problem with breads sticking to the loaf pan or the blade inside the pan. Most bread machines have very oddly shaped loaves, in my opinion, however, when I choose to bake a loaf of bread in this machine, rather than just using the dough option, the bread always comes out looking and smelling fabulous! I have never had a loaf of bread to date fall, burn, or turn out in any way other than perfect! If you are looking for a bread machine that won't break the bank, but that is high quality I highly suggest the Sunbeam 5890! Believe me--you won't regret it!
Customer Review: Fair results--wacky instructions/manual--delayed dough! Summary: 3 Stars
I have not read this in other reviews of this product, and I just bought mine right before Amazon stopped shipping it direcly and it started being sold only by a 3rd party, so I think there are a couple of different versions out there. However, the directions on the machine I have, and in the manual are WRONG. Just wrong. Period. If you do things in the order the instructions tell you to with the delay timer--THE MACHINE WILL MIX YOUR YEAST IN THE SECOND YOU PUSH THE START BUTTON. Big problem if you weren't planning on being around for the next 3-4 hours (which is why you would use the delay). However, once you figure out that, no matter what, the up and down time buttons must be the last buttons you touch before "start," it does okay.
A HUGE, added bonus is that it will let you delay dough--almost no machines, other than the zoji, can do this.
I have used the basic, sweet, dough and sandwich cycles so far. The bread it creates is just okay (the crust is too thick when baked in the machine). However, I mostly use the dough cycle for all my needs anyways.
I had an Express Bake Oster for 2 years before this that I used about 2x/week--it recently broke. THat machine had less function settings, but was more reliable.
All this, combined with the very low price, makes this an okay, serviciable machine.
Customer Review: Sporatic Baking Results, Hard to Clean Well Summary: 2 Stars
I received this machine in May as a wedding gift. I got it out pretty quickly and starting to play with its functions. Sometimes I got an awesome loaf, but more often I got a loaf that had badly fallen during cooking. I tried multiple brands of yeast and flour, and really could never come up with a good combination. But, I didn't have to bake it myself, so I took it as that's how bread machines go. It worked fairly well to bake with, More often that not I used it to mix the dough and finished it by hand.
My main complaint is that the hook rarely came off easily. It would stick to the drive post and I'd have to get a tool to pull it out of the loaf pan (Apparantly the inside of the dough hook is not coated and rusts). In mid October it refused to come out completely. I was finally able to get the shaft (with hook attached) out of the pan with tools from the bottom of the pan, but unfortunately, Sunbeam does not provide the parts seperately. Thus to make my machine work again I have to buy an entire new pan (with drive shatf and hook assembly. However, I'm left wondering if in less than another 6 months if it will need to be repaced again.
As for the recipes, I have used them enough to know that they are not properly balanced for that machines capabilities. It's a yeast eater, an thus more expensive to run than most other machines.
