Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Starfrit 93013 Pro-Apple Peeler with bonus core slicerCustomer Review: VERY BEST APPLE PEELER ON THE MARKET!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I was a bit wary of this product when I read about it, but it really does work extremely well. It's easy to clean, and, unless you have a really deformed apple, gets all the skin off except for a small bit at the opposite end you start. The core slicer that comes with it finishes off the job by slicing the apple into eight (I think its eight) pieces and separates the center with the seeds from them. Trust me, this unit eliminates chance of hurting yourself with a paring knife by peeling apples by hand, and it is fast. You can peel an apple in like 5 seconds, trying doing that with a knife! The only thing I suggest is after you have peeled the apple, before you core it, cut the part of the apple off (top or bottom) that still has peeling on it before you core it. The reason is if you core it with peeling on the bottom the core slicer sticks on the bottom and you have trouble pulling the core out of the core slicer and getting the apple pieces off the bottom (the peeling holds them in place). Other than that (and I gave you the solution to the problem), this is a super great product. I have probably gone through a 100 pounds of apples, and I am still using the original little razor that comes with the unit. They give you a spare, so you should be set for a long time. Although it is just plastic (there is no metal other than the razor part), I have not had any problems with the plastic (if you drop it on a hard surface, it may break, depending on how it hits the floor), and I guess there is always the possibility of the handle or other part snapping. Oh, the handle just pops on a gear unit, so it can come off, but if you are careful that almost never happens.
Customer Review: This apple peeler rocks! Summary: 5 Stars
I love this peeler.
I ordered this apple peeler the week I had picked a half-bushel of apples at the local orchard (what was I thinking!) and needed to get them peeled and processed quickly and easily. I bought it on the strength of all the 5-star reviews I found on Amazon. I was skeptical, I admit, having owned one of those expensive cast iron models. Those look good but peel away too much of the fruit, and after a couple of uses, the one I had was falling apart, I couldn't adjust the tension anymore, and I gave it the old bum's rush.
But this Starfrit gizmo redeemed my faith in crank apple peelers. It works cleanly and smoothly, removes very little of the fruit, and I was able to peel, core, slice, and freeze that whole half-bushel in little less than two hours. On a couple of the apples, the peeler didn't remove everything but I just kept cranking and it got the rest of the peel on the second pass.
I used the free included corer/slicer and it worked well too. I did not try the included core ejector.
Although plastic, the Starfrit is very solid - it doesn't look or feel like it's going to crack or fall apart.
The Starfrit comes with three blades altogether, and I only needed to use one for that half-bushel, but it was showing some pitting on the blade edge, so I'm going to order a bunch more of the blades - I always like to have enough replacements on hand.
One slight negative - the suction cup feet didn't always stay attached to the counter, and I had to hold the peeler down with one hand, so technically this item deserves only 4.5 stars.
Customer Review: Better than I expected Summary: 5 Stars
Yup, this little guy looks like a toy, but don't let that fool you. It definitely is NOT a toy. I purchased this based on a couple of the reviews I read here, and frankly, because the price was right.
I've used it three times now, twice to make apple pie and once to make an apple cake. Each time I use it I marvel at the speed of peeling the apples. Someone mentioned 7 seconds. I think it takes more like 3-5 seconds. I was thrilled and wanted to keep peeling apples just to watch the process over and over. *grin*
The corer-slicer works well and the two together changed the experience of making apple pies from drudgery to a dream. The peelings are thin but thick enough to save for making apple jelly (I pop the peelings into a bag and into the freezer until I have enough for jelly), and the cores have enough meat left on 'em to make those worth saving too. I can't praise this little peeler enough. I've used the corer, and that is a little more difficult to use, but it works. It needed a bit more strength than I had to push the core out of the corer, but my granddaughter helped with that.
I'm not sure how long this will hold up, but it should last for a good number of years. If it wears out or breaks, I will come back to this type of peeler due to the performance of this one.
Customer Review: looks cheap but works better than the standard kind Summary: 5 Stars
This is a really good apple peeler. The blade is wider than in standard peelers (the red ones where you put the apple sideways) so it peels the apple faster. It peels around the top and bottom of the apple, missing only the parts right above and below the core, so after coring the apple there's no skin left--no touch-ups required. It comes with a corer, a corer/slicer, two extra blades, and little plastic covers for the blade and prongs. It's easy to clean.
The cons: It looks like it belongs in a toy chest, so if you pride yourself on your beautiful Martha Stewart kitchen you're going to want to put this away after using it rather than leave it displayed. It doesn't work well at all on potatoes--even when you cut them in half first, it still misses lots of spots and carves them into apple shapes. There are four plastic suction cups on its base to keep it from moving while you're using it, and you have to wet them to make them work. It only takes a few drops of water, though, and then they work fine.
I love mine and use it all the time. For me, the cons are outweighed by the usefulness of being able to peel, core, and slice an apple in seven seconds. I'll never go back to a sideways peeler.
Customer Review: A better apple peeler! Summary: 5 Stars
I have had the apple peeler style with the red handle for about 12 years, and when the prongs that hold the apples started to break off, I finally had an excuse to get rid of it. It had the following problems. 1: The metal screw that twisted to push the apple got black stuff all over your hands when you touched it, which was neccessary to get the apples on and off the prongs. Not something desirable when working with food. 2: To core the apples, they had to be sliced very thinly, not optimal for pies, for example. 3: It didn't work well on small or irregularly shaped apples. This clear plastic apple peeler allows you to peel the apples, then slice them however you want. It peels apples faster than the other, and it comes with a corer that doesn't require slicing, and a corer/slicer that cuts the apples into eigths. Both work well. All the tools were effective even for odd shaped apples. I'm thrilled with it! The only small flaw was that water got inside when I washed it. This was pretty easy to get around. There are a couple of screws that allow the device to be disassembled and reassembled quickly and easily. Even if the plastic or the razor don't hold up well over time, I'll happily buy 10 of these before I ever buy another of the other kind.
