Customer Review: Pretty good peeler, bad vendor.

The Starfrit 93013 really does peel apples pretty well. Its straight blade does a much better job than the more commonly available peelers that use a U-shaped blade. If you're doing more than three apples, it makes sense to use a peeler like this.
It's mostly plastic, so it may not be the most durable kitchen gadget you've ever bought. The Y-shaped blade holder seems fragile to me. It looks like it could easily break when changing blades. Nevertheless, the price is right and it's fun to use.
The Starfrit comes with a coring device and another tool for coring and cutting apples into sections. Neither is worth the trouble. Since apple cores aren't cylindrical, the tool wastes some apple where the core is narrow and doesn't take out enough where the core is larger. The section cutter makes the sections too big for pie-making. It's hard to get either accessory to accurately core the apple. While both are sharp and well-made, you're better off using with a paring knife, in my opinion.
The vendor, I Need Stuff, on the other hand is a problem. When I received the peeler, it was shipped in a USPS Priority Mail box. The outer box was undamaged. Inside was the peeler in its box, but no packing so the peeler box was free to slide back and forth in the USPS box.
When I took the peeler out, I noticed that the peeler box had been opened as the tape was cut. Inside, I found that the peeler components were all there, but some were not in their original plastic bags. Worse, the peeler itself was broken into two pieces and several chips had been broken out out of the peeler base. It looked like a return that had not been inspected before being re-shipped. It was unusable.
I contacted the vendor and requested a replacement. Instead, in an e-mail, I was instructed to throw away the broken peeler and that I would be issued a refund. A few days later, I got a personal, not business, check. I had paid by credit card. The check was good, but I cannot recommend this vendor.
I subsequently re-ordered the peeler from Amazon directly. This one arrived new and undamaged.
