Customer Review: How to Make Fizzier-Than-Store-Bought Seltzer (Shaken, not Stirred)

Let me begin by saying that I was not satisfied with the first liter of seltzer I made with the Fountain Jet. Having owned home seltzer makers before, most notably the ISI soda siphon, I chilled my water to just above freezing, pumped in the carbon dioxide, and drank. The fizz far surpassed the siphon, but it couldn't compare with the seltzer I bought in the store.
Luckily, I was struck by an idea. Why not shake the fountain jet? In the siphon, the seltzer benefits immensely from being shaken (the surface area between the carbon dioxide and the water is increased). So, I picked up the entire machine, held the bottle firmly in place (a very important step otherwise you will lose all the pressure), and shook like crazy. After shaking, I pumped in more carbon dioxide, and shook again. I did this a few times. The seltzer came out fizzy enough to burn the back of my throat. Need I say more?

We started using the sodestream a little over a year ago.
It is fun and simple to use.
I simply place an order (directly from Sodastream) for the CO2 refill, pop the empty on the porch and within a week it is picked up and replaced with a full one. There is an earlier review that says they're difficult to find, but I live in the middle of nowhere and I have no issue with it. I have purchased an additional CO2 canister so I'm never out of soda.
The syrup flavors are really good. I don't like the cola, as it is more like RC Cola than Coke. However the lemon-lime is very much like Sierra Mist, the Ice tea mixes are really great, and the Pete's Choice is great too.
The best part is being able to have sparkling water without the sodium that you get with store bought seltzer. It also helps to not have empty bottles to lug around and return.

I gave this four out of five stars for several reasons.
1. It is a cheepy unit and seems as if it could break easily, but this has not mattered so far.
2. The syrups are not the greatest.
I gave it four stars because I really like it even with the above being true. I love making sparkling water, and the syrup flavors are good enough. I love the idea that I am no longer having to recycle also.
I am going to look into a different brand of syrup or maybe even get some Coke or Pepsi syrup from Sam's or Costco (yes you can do this, but they come in pretty big containers)
I have not yet had to deal with ordering more CO2, but my unit was shipped REALLY fast and I am so far satisfied with the company.
Overall I would recommend (and have done so) to a friend. With Christmas right around the corner I am thinking of getting this for family.

I thought this was a good idea until I received the product and my first refill order. The Soda maker is very flimsy and won't last for long. The carbonator refills are very expensive. Customer support is non-existent. You cannot find out when an item is coming as they don't provide tracking. They are very slow in filling their orders. My first supply order was for five bottles of syrup and two more plastic storage bottles. Three leaked out in the box and the plastic spare bottles were omitted from the order. The instructions for measuring syrup are vague and customer support gave me four different answers. They are basically clueless and are unable to answer questions and solve problems.
The product is great idea with lousy execution. I would stay clear. I am going to take advantage of their 100% 30-day satisfaction guarantee and send it all back.

The sodastream fountain works as advertised, and I really notice the difference when shopping - both in not purchasing carbonated beverages, and in not having to carry them back to the house. Nice selection of flavors for mixes, and you can experiment with other mixes as well. The storage saved by keeping flavors in mix bottles instead of carbonated cans is also appreciable, allowing me to keep around far more flavors than I used to, including a mix of caffeine free and not caffeine free for evening and morning consumption, meaning this product helps me sleep better.
That said, the company is disorganized. If you need something done that isn't part of their normal sales process, you'll have to call repeatedly to find the person who knows what needs to happen, and then again to actually make it happen. That should be rare enough that it only cost them a star.
