Customer Review: The only kitchen appliance I take with me when I travel

I bought this on the recommendation of the Nutrition Diva's podcast initially because it sounded like a cool gadget, and I was looking to increase my water intake. The price hasn't changed at all since I bought it in March of 2010, and it was comparable to the vendor's website at that point, but this one (I bought the Pure Starter Kit, Black/Silver) came with a second BPA-free carbonating bottle, and a sampler pack of the beverage syrups.
When I first got it, it was a novelty - I tried it with several of the diet sodas (the Mt Dew equivalent was pretty good). There is a tonic water flavoring for those who have a bar, but I've never tried it. Eventually I found that the flavor essence flavoring was my favorite (just a few drops from the bottle), or a few drops of juice from the fridge.
Now, I've graduated to plain water. It's amazing, but unless your water tastes horrible (I did try carbonating some water with a high sulfur content once - it was still bad), it changes the flavor to be much more palatable. I generally use filtered tap water at home - if I just pour the tap water into a bottle, it's okay as long as it's cold. With the sodastream, It's even okay warm (though cold is still preferable!).
Very safe - no health risks (unless you have problems with carbonation - such as gastric banding). The water is a pure as what you start with.
The refill cartridges are a bit of a hassle - and somewhat pricey (you can't fill them yourself or use a large tank unless you're a hacker), but worth it for the portability. I found that local stores sometimes go on backorder, so I now own a license for 3 and swap them out as they are empty. Canisters usually last 2-3 weeks in our household of 2, but we love it.
Each container is 4 cups, so I usually try to drink at least 2 a day, which is great! I'm considering buying a second carbonator for my office -- you fill the bottle at the tap, and the carbonator itself doesn't require any electricity.
If I'm going on a road trip I will usually throw it in the back of the car (honestly!) as I enjoy the carbonated water that much. If it's a long trip, we just stop at the gas station for a large jug of cold water here and there to make refills.
Highly recommend it! I can't sing enough praises for it. If you're trying to increase your water intake, or just save money on sodas and cut down on the environmental impact of plastic bottles, this is for you. Don't hesitate. You'll love it.
(BTW, newer entry-level models allow for use of either size cylinder. The gas is cheap, but the cylinders are expensive. This may make the long-term price more affordable for you)
