I really like the Smartshopper Deluxe shopping list organizer. I bought it for my wife for Christmas, and we both took to it immediately. It is easy to use, has a better voice recognition program than my cell phone, and makes grocery shopping quicker.
Pros: Convenient to use: just push the large record button and speak the name of the item you desire. Push the select button and adjust the quantity to increase the number of items you want to purchase. You can make two lists for different stores. We have one for the grocery and one for the discount club. When you print the list, it organizes it by grouping the products by category: very convenient helping to keep me from going from one side of a large grocery to another and back again because I missed something. Thermal printer needs no ink. replacement rolls of paper reasonably priced on Amazon. Uses standard AA batteries; over two months of use and still on first roll of paper and batteries still going strong. After you print the list, a couple of clicks clear the list from the memory. Magnet holds it to refrigerator door, no hunting for pen or paper. It comes with an enormous database of standard items, and if it has trouble understanding your pronunciation of some product, it allows you to re-record the voice tag yourself, thereby greatly improving it's ability to correctly select your desired item. As I wrote earlier, the voice recognition is already very good, but by allowing us to pronounce our own version of gorgonzola cheese, it rarely misses what we want. The device also allows you to add items to the list, pick the category to include them in, and pronounce the names. This an extremely well designed product and seems to be very adjustable, and the build is of excellent quality and justifies the price point.
Cons: This is why I did not give a really nifty product 5 stars: Call me a whiner, but the interface for adding items is a pain. You have to use three buttons to move the cursor around the alphabet and the space button is off on the right of the screen. It seems to take forever to add a new vegetable, or cheese, or beverage to the master list. And good luck if you want to look for something on the master list because it has thousands of items and shows very few at a time; even holding the fast scroll button isn't all that fast. Once I have added all the items we use that are not in the master list, everything will be fine, but in the mean time, I cringe when I have to add something new. I wonder if it would increase the cost prohibitively to include a little USB link so the Smartshopper could be attached to a personal computer like cell phones are? Then, we could manipulate the database or add items to the list via computer. Once you hit Ben Franklin territory with a convenience gadget that is a completely discretionary purchase, why not go the final step and make it as user friendly as possible. I cannot see where they would lose any sales by adding a computer interface even if it increased the price by ten percent or so.
