SIMPLE REVIEW:
I'll admit, I'm jumping the gun a bit here, but...I am going to try and return this disappointment as soon as possible even though I just tried it out for around an hour this morning--trying to test it out. Too long. It doesn't even work. The single stitch idea, while handy for folks like me who keep forgetting how to thread a bobbin on a big sewing machine, doesn't carry out the "easy" factor as well as it should, as it unravels if you don't do it right. Plus, mine doesn't even run right (I'll admit, it might be the batteries, but they were all almost full, practically, so it shouldn't have been any trouble). Reading some more reviews on here, I'm now very unhappy and would say that this is a cake. And, as anyone who explores the internets might know, the cake is a lie. AVOID AT ALL COSTS or wave bye-bye to that $16 that could have been used to grab you some extra snacks to have for when the cafeteria closes before you get there. (No pun intended in that sentence.)
DETAILED REVIEW:
Hi, I'm a (male) freshman at Coe College. I found this thing when I was rushing through Target, trying to find a simple metal thimble among the other things I needed. (Of course, they didn't carry just a thimble; I bought a large pack with lots of other sewing things in addition to that. Stupid Target.) I saw it and was like, "Oh, my God, YES! I've been looking for one of these! It would make my life so much easier!" As in, right now, I've got at least two pairs of jeans behind me now in serious need of repair on the rear end, one of them having a HUGE rip.
Well, I purchased the machine and it sat under my bed for almost a whole week until this morning, when I awoke and found myself with some free time betwixt morning ablutions and flute practice, so I decided to try it out. (My roommate was asleep, but seeing as his alarm clock, blaringly loud and obnoxious for extended periods, failed to awake him when it woke me up an hour before I wanted, I knew it wouldn't bother him. *chuckles* ) What a disappointment. *Problem numbah uno*, I had a bit of trouble with getting out the sample cloth they included and tying off the stitching. Then, after deciding to try to use it on my own, giving it a chance, I put in a black bobbin and tried again with some batteries.
*Problem numbah deux*, the way they have the 4AA battery thing set up is pretty unintuitive. You see two springs and two metal tabs opening it up, set up like "::", with the springs on the right. So, naturally, I thought, 'The machine was built a little wrong; they should have switched around one of the springs and tabs,' and put them in the way I thought I should. Well, Singer broke a sort of "rule of making battery compartments", because it didn't work and only worked when I had it in a way that the + side of one battery was on the spring, which generally isn't smart, I don't think.
*Problem numbah san*, IT JUST WON'T WORK. I click it on, and it does nothing. Even waiting 5 seconds, nothing. Only when I push down on the arm or rotate the knob a bit and then turn it on again will it work--and even then for only a few seconds. You're better off just rotating the wheel all day.
(*Note*: I also think that having a normal movement teeth conveyor thingamajig (the thing below the cloth that moves it whenever the needle comes up so that it doesn't mark time and make a big hole in your fabric) isn't that good an idea for something like this; at least, one where the only movement is the elliptical one it has, especially one-way. I was hoping for something that could go all directions easily without turning the cloth much, such as when you want to sew on a patch on the seat of some pants. The legs would get in the way of the sewing machine and would be a hassle. If it just went up and down, even as an option, you could do it more freely.)
In closing, it doesn't work, it doesn't work, and it doesn't work. The end result doesn't work, the usability doesn't work, and the machine itself doesn't work. I don't know HOW they managed to get the commercial version to work like it did, but this thing does not work. DON'T GET IT.
