I've been a long time J.A. Henckels user and love there knives, but my Shun classic has quickly made it's way to the most used knife in my bag.
When I first got this knife I was afraid to use it in the day to day world of my job because of it's good looks, but unlike most knives that just rely on there good looks for the selling point, this knife is a true work horse. The handle did feel a little strange at first but once you get used to it, you understand why it was made that way. As a Chef, I recomend this knife to any santoku lover, it was well worth the price.

I have several high-end Japanese and German kitchen knives from top manufacturers such as Hattori and Wusthof. I was impressed by the quality of the Shun Santoku. Contrary to the one very negative review here in Amazon, I found the edge to be evenly ground and exceptionally sharp. The knife has good heft and balance, it's very attractive, and the D-shaped handle feels great, especially when using a pinch grip. This is a great all-around kitchen knife, especially at the current $79.95 price.Customer Review: Best. Knife. Ever

I received this knife the other day as a gift and immediately noticed how fantastic it was. It absolutely out-performs any knife that I've seen or with which I've had contact. I had to scramble to find an immediate use for it and found myself cutting up oranges. I was shocked when I noticed that the knife practically fell through the fruit. It was absolutely like a searing knife through butter. In one word: amazing. If you only have one knife, this should be it.Customer Review: Perfect all-round kitchen utility knife

PROS: Excellent edge. Great weight and in the right places. Classic design.
CONS: Use only on a wooden chopping block (you could very easily damage edge otherwise). Special needs sharpening.
NOTES: You're gonna have to relearn the way you chop if you are used to using the tip as a pivot (this knife is very effective in a direct down chop and from heal to tip).
As always, Amazon experience flawless.

received this knife as a gift a couple years back. so far i have no complaints. the edge is sharp and keeps its edge for a good period of time. the knife looks awesome and it has served me well over the years. the best thing about it is the free sharpening service that Shun provides. just send the knife back to the factory and they will return it to you freshly sharpened back to the original edge. overall a solid knife
