Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Sharp R-820Bk 900-Watt 0.9 Cubic Foot Convection Microwave, Black

Customer Review: 3.5 years later...DEAD!
Summary: 2 Stars

After three and a half years of relatively good service, this unit is now dead. Went to heat up some milk for my coffee like I do on most days and POP! No power. Called Sharp since at least the magnetron should still be under warranty but they couldn't help. They just referred us to some local repair shops.

Called one of the repair shops and the guy said it sounded like the power supply had blown out and that can range anywhere from $75-150 to fix it. So...pretty much not worth it to get it repaired, unfortunately!

So, unless you plan on doing a lot of the direct heat and convection cooking, which we really didn't, save some money and get a cheaper unit that won't break the budget when you have to replace it.

By the way, the popcorn setting on this thing really doesn't work all that well. It seems no matter what brand of popcorn we bought, or whether or not we used the popcorn setting, it always wanted to burn. I think it's the metal tray. The one time I tried using a glass pie dish turned upside down, it seemed to work better. But I'd always forget to get it out to use again. Just a heads up!

Customer Review: Very Pleased With The Purchase
Summary: 4 Stars

I am really enjoying using this oven and am very happy with the product. The unit is fairly large but since it replaces two items in my kitchen, a countertop microwave and a countertop convection oven, in my case it is a space saving device. You do have to have a larger space for it than the average microwave occupies, mostly due to the depth. The microwave is 900w. I am used to 1100w so have to add to the the microwaving times a bit. So far, no problems estimating that. Baking with the convection feature cuts down the cooking time by around 25% or a little more and the results have been outstanding. You can bake pizza directly on the carousel and it comes out perfectly. The interactive feature is very useful but the instruction manual could be a little more detailed. It still takes a bit of figuring out if you are unaccustomed to a micro/convection combo. Be sure to study the manual before you start using the product for anything but microwaving. It does come with a few recipes in the manual but not many. I bought a recipe book at the same time to go along with it. I recommend this unit.

Customer Review: Sharp convection microwave
Summary: 5 Stars

I am very happy with this microwave, it's just what I wanted, the convenience of a microwave and a smaller (convection) oven for when my kids want to cook up a little something, rather than heating up the big conventional oven. I read reviews about it that said the turntable was wobbly, but I don't have that problem at all, maybe they haven't seated it fully. I was dismayed to find that the convection cookbook says to use the same time for oven cooking that I use in a conventional oven. I'd thought convection would be about 15% less time...but still, it's better than the the big oven space heating up for a small portion. It's attractive, and it takes up slightly less room that my older Sharp microwave. I do have to keep the user manual handy - can't remember all the steps nor the codes to do what I want to, e.g Reheat means put in a number code to correspond with what you want to reheat...and Preheat, another number code corresponds to the temp you want to reheat to. But the results are satisfying and I hope I reduce my energy costs somewhat.

Customer Review: Wouldn't buy it again
Summary: 3 Stars

I purchased this microwave in February, 2010. The one I had before was a GE and it lasted only 2 years. Fortunately, I had bought the extended warranty from Home Depot when I bought it although it was a huge fight to get them to honor it, but they finally did and they sent me a gift card for the entire cost. I did a great deal of research selecting this one. I think I read 300 reviews of many different brands before settling on the Sharp Convection. It was more than I wanted to pay-over double my last one, but what sold me is that I can bake in it and do more than microwave. I like it so far-it's quieter than the GE was and seems faster although the wattage is lower. I hope it lasts longer than 2 years because I am not buying any more extended warranties.

UPDATE: November, 2010: It's okay but be prepared to wait much longer for things to be mircowaved through. The center is useally still cold after the recommended amount of time. Figure adding on another 2-3 minutes.

Customer Review: hard-to-find item, but works great!
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased the Sharp R-820Bk convection microwave as a replacement for a GE 1100 watt micro that failed. I was hoping the addition of the convection and grilling ability would make the oven more versatile, and I have not been disappointed. It preheats quickly and is easy to use - although there is always a learning curve. It's great to be able to use this oven instead of heating up the range, especially for single or smaller items. Peach cobbler came out great and grilled hamburgers & steaks did as well. Cleanup after grilling was a easier than I anticipated when using the tips in the accompanying book (i.e. rub or spray the rack with oil). The 900 watt micro takes a little longer to cook than my previous 1100 watt oven, but is still perfectly acceptable. This oven is more expensive than a microwave alone, but the price is fair and appropriate, considering the features and ease of use. I did a lot of research before the purchase and do not regret this choice.
