Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Sharp R-230KK 800-Watt 4/5-Cubic-Foot Compact Microwave, BlackCustomer Review: Noisy. noisy, noisy and underpowered! Summary: 1 Stars
To start with, I am a big fan of Sharp electronics. I have had great luck with VCR's, CD players, TV's etc. They have worked great, lasted a long time and not cost too much. When I needed a new microwave I looked on Amazon for Sharp and this one popped right up. Given my faith in Sharp I bought it.
It turns out to be the noisiest microwave I ever heard. The whole kitchen rumbles from it. I even made rubber pads for under the feet but it did not help. It is also rather short on features and even at max heat setting heats stuff very slowly. I used it for a while, a little too long to return it I thought, then simply couldn't stand it any more. I went to my local "shopping club" and got a GE that is waaayyy quieter, heats stuff almost twice as fast, has much handier controls, is much more solidly built, and cost $10 less than the Sharp. The Sharp is so bad I actually gave it away after a month.
All this from from a former Sharp fan!
Customer Review: flimsy door, sensitive latch Summary: 3 Stars
I originally looked at the white version of this model, and quite a few of the reviews said that their microwave arrived and would not function. I decided to take my chances and get a black one. When it arrived I was afraid I had gambled and lost, because it would accept a cooking time but we could never get it to start. Today I discovered that if you make sure the top and bottom latches are locked, and then press down on the door so that it is lined up with the body exactly, it will start.
I'm sure that the shielding is sufficient so that when the door is fully latched, the radiation is kept to a minimum, even if the plastic components allow for a little bit of give in the up and down direction. The motor of ours doesn't seem especially noisy, and for us it is the perfect balance of a small exterior and a sufficiently large interior. Once I get used to the ritual necessary for starting it, I believe I'll be quite happy with it.
Customer Review: The Sharp R-230 800-Watt 4/5-Cubic-Foot Compact Microwave Oven Summary: 5 Stars
As is well known, microwave ovens are energy-efficient, fast, low-maintenance, do not take up much space, are adaptable to many home and office areas, they are generally safe and easy to use as long as general instructions are followed. My Sharp Carousel microwave oven has proven its worth over the couple of years I have used it. The design is appealing, it is sturdy and stable, cooks and heats efficiently like it promises to. There are a good number of settings on there, but those are minor compared to its main function of merely cooking, heating, reheating, and defrosting a variety of basic. I have not noticed any problems with this Sharp microwave...one mainly ought to regularly soap wipe the interior and wash the rotating dish, etc. The rotating dish circulates normally, as is required. And for sure, this microwave oven, especially if you use microwaves regularly, delivers way much more than its conservative price of $50-100!
Customer Review: Replacement for same one that lasted 17 years Summary: 4 Stars
Seems to be OK so far overall- almost 4 star rating I would say. More powerful of course than the 600-watt - 17 year old model we had. Takes getting used to that power-level #1 actually heats things up somewhat in one minute's time. Some negatives; - it is very light weighted and slides a bit too easy on the counter-top when opening/closing the door or pushing the buttons. The one real/main criticsm I have is that on the old model (circa 1990) - the 'start' and 'clear' buttons were separated from the rest of the buttons and down on the bottom of the panel - clearly defined. This new one - the start and clear buttons are in the middle of all the rest of the buttons and is hard for me to pickout unless I check the label names carefully each time. I thought after a month's time I would be able to find it easier - but no so far. They should have made the 'primary' buttons easier to find.
Customer Review: Door Opens - Clunky & Loud Summary: 2 Stars
I am not fond of this particular microwave because of the loud clunky sound of the door opening. Poor in my opinion. I can't believe that I will probably put up with this for years as I use my microwave several times a day. My husband just complained that the start button is hidden on the user display among the other buttons. Seems like there should some sort of user standards for display input. Like Power buttons in the upper left corner. Most-used buttons should be large. maybe in a special color. I like the web 2.0 look that is developing on user interfaces. No user interface should make the user feel stupid is my thought. I asked my husband what was the brand name and he said "Sharp" so even if cheap I think Sharp ought to protect the brand image. But I see that I am in the minority of opinions here. Maybe my advice is not order on line till you try this item out.
