Customer Review: Bright colors, nostalgia and loving care...

I had fond memories of these tumblers from my childhood. Grandma had a set and I was fascinated by the bright jewel tones. I remembered that milk seemed to taste more delicious in these than any other tumbler. I bought two sets of these, thinking I would satisfy my nostalgic longing to recreate my childhood and solve a persistant problem I'd been having, all at the same time. My problem was that I was sick and tired of having to replace broken glasses. I tried plastic drinkware but hated the way they made everything taste. Aluminum tumblers seemed like the best answer. I loved them as soon as I opened the package and yes, they did satisfy my longing to recreate special childhood memories. The tumblers are just as beautiful as they were years ago, and milk does taste better in them than in any other kind of drinkware. I never realized, however, how easily they transfer the cold of the drink to your hands. Apparently, it didn't bother me as a child and it seemed a minor inconvenience to me now. The greater inconvenience is that these beautiful tumblers are not dishwasher safe. I faithfully handwashed them for many months, sometimes having to rescue them from the dishwasher when placed in there by a lazy husband or an errant child. But after a while, it got to be too much of a hassle and I finally gave up on washing them by hand and started putting them into the dishwasher. Quickly, the gorgeous jewel tones wore away and the tumblers were all reduced to a silver-y sameness. Absolutely heartbreaking. Hubby complained mightily about the fact that the tumblers conducted the cold temperature of their contents too easily and one day threw out my now naked but still beloved tumblers. Sigh... The moral of the story is that you should buy these tumblers only if you can commit to handwashing them forever and make sure you don't mind holding a really cold drink.
