Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Sanyo HPS-SG3 200-Square-Inch Electric Indoor Barbeque Grill, BlackCustomer Review: Sanyo indoor griller - not impressive in Australia Summary: 2 Stars
We have bought two of these indoor grillers, via Amazon, as they are not available here in Australia. The first one worked well the first time, but when I washed it later, it didn't work again. An electrician had a look at it and said that the element had 'blown' as evidenced by a burn mark about half way around the element. I thought it was because of the way I'd washed it but now I think the element was defective. About three months later I bought another unit, the exact same model. When it was turned on, it went POP and a small flame was seen at the same place on the element where the burn mark on the previous unit had appeared. Amazon refunded the purchase and shipping costs.
I didn't make as claim for the first unit as I thought it was my fault but now I don't think it was.
I got the impression that the power 240volts in Australia is too strong for these units. Sanyo HPS-SG3 200-Square-Inch Electric Indoor Barbeque Grill, Black
Customer Review: Smokeless--on what planet? Summary: 2 Stars
I desperatly wanted to love this grill. I had visions of ordering them as Christmas presents for my entire family later this year. Sadly, I doubt I'll get much use out of it.
I'm experienced with indoor grilling, and I followed the directions to the letter. I turned my exhaust fan on high, placing the grill directly under it, yet my apartment was filled with smoke. Even after cleaning the grill and the entire kitchen it stinks in here. I've sprayed air freshners and can still smell it.
If I can't cook simple hamburgers on it without setting off the smoke alarm and having to air the place out for days, what use is it to me.
Two other things are troubling. The thermostat dial is too vague, making it hard to determine at what temperature your grill is functioning and the ridiculously shallow drip pan makes emptying it an Olympic sport.
I'll try it again, using a higher tolerance cooking spray, but I don't hold out much hope for success and certainly wouldn't recommend it.
Customer Review: mixed results! Summary: 3 Stars
Basically this grill does as advertised. I was concerned about excess smoke with an indoor grill but the water filled drip tray totally eliminates this problem!
However - some functional issues,
First - the heat distribution on the gill is NOT even, one side is not nearly as hot as the other regardless of thermostat setting;
Second - it is slower than I would have thought - my George Foreman Grill cooks stuff in about 1/4 the time. Some meats turn out better on this grill though - closer to BBQ.
Third - Nice large grill area but because of temp variation you can't really use the whole grill at once unless you have items that need to cook at different temps. Also large cooking area means a large footprint when storing - takes up lots of space if stored flat and because base, drip tray and grill surface are not attached to each other the grill falls apart if stored on its edge.
Conclusion - fair value for us. We use it but have to adapt to the above issues.
Customer Review: Great grill, speed up heating with this tip... Summary: 5 Stars
This grill really is fantastic. It's virtually smokeless if you follow the directions and it's great not to have to use the outdoor charcoal or gas grill when the weather is bad or you're just not in the mood for outdoor cooking.
A few tips:
1) I set up my grill on top of my ceramic cooktop and what little smoke there may be is easily handled by my vent hood.
2) While it does usually take a little long to preheat if left alone, as another reviewer suggested, you CAN speed that up using a large jellyroll pan (mine is 18"x12" and it works perfectly) as a cover for the grill. When I cover the grill with the jellyroll pan, it preheats in about 4-5 minutes.
3) Thicker cuts of meat can benefit from this same trick. Use a deep pot lid as a dome over your meat to finish cooking the center and bring the meats up to safe temperature.
All in all, I'm tickled with this purchase and the low price makes it's just that much sweeter. I highly recommend.
Customer Review: Almost perfect! Time consuming to wash though! Summary: 4 Stars
My family and I LOVE this product! It does produce a bit of smoke, but that's no issue for us since we cook it under our vent. It takes a while to heat up to the max heat, but when it gets there it's good to go and stays pretty hot.
Though it is a bit disappointing there is no lid. It is pretty easy to accidently scratch the surface of the non-stick top. Though to be frank I rubbed it rather hard and after that we never had that problem. The backside of the grill is a pain to clean up though. I see comments about how easy it is to clean it up.. Well you guys might be doing a mediocre job cause to fully get the grill clean it takes detailed work to make it sparkle.
Overall great grill and we love it. The price $40? What a steal! If you look at the grill/griddle type items in a retail store, anything REMOTELY close to this will cost you $80+.
If our current unit breaks. We will be making another purchase. This product has been integrated into our dieting styles now.
