Customer Review: Charred on the outside, raw on the inside.

I've had this grill for a couple months now and still haven't gotten a piece of meat cooked to my satisfaction. The title of this review says it all: I've tried low temps, medium temps, high temps, thin cuts, thick cuts, and no matter what I do my steak comes out tough and charred outside and almost raw on the inside.
For some reason the heating element doesn't radiate much beyond contact with whatever you're cooking. I keep finding myself trapped between wanting the interior of the meat cooked beyond rare and ending up with the exterior of the meat overly charred.
Edit: It's now been eight months and I have thrown the unit in the garbage and changed my rating from 2 stars to 1. I never managed to cook a decent steak on this thing. It is the definition of worthless junk.
Probs:
1) the drip pan quickly turns into a paint-peeling, rusty, nasty mess; the pan was clearly not designed for its purpose.
2) the heating element is underpowered; there is not enough juice going to the grill to adequately cook what rests on its surface.
3) the grill gets covered in char and the design of the grill does not facilitate removal of charred material; in short, its a pain to clean.

I'm not much of a cooker at home. I went to visit family in NC and they were grilling so much and it was soooo good that I wanted to be able to do it at home without having to drag out a grill, get charcoal and start a fire each time I just wanted 2 veggie burgers and a veggie dog or two. I found this and it works supurbly!!!! The food tastes just as if it were grilled on a traditional grill to me. I've also done salmon and asparagus and they were to die for.
My only disappointment is that the holder is plastic and someone left it on the stove while they were using the oven and an area of it was affected by the heat. The device itself still works fine but I don't like the disfiguration from the heat....I'm just anal like that. In my quest not to use Brillo pads on it I find that sometimes it can be a little hard to get it "completely" clean but I'm a clean freak also so I didn't take away any star power for my own personal idiosyncracies.
Overall it's a great deal and I would get one again and I would get one for a friend or faily member.
P.S. I even took a burger to my dad that I made on it and he agreed about the taste. He knows his stuff because he cooks his booty off :-D

Simple, reasonably priced, not hard to clean. Big enough if you're cooking for one or two, or three or four with modest appetites. I get minimal smoke when I put water in the drip pan beforehand.
I almost gave this five stars but it's not quite perfect. It takes up more room than I'd have expected given the cooking area, and I'm glad I didn't get the bigger version, the HPS-SG3. The drip pan and the grill sit atop a plastic collar that needs a flat surface underneath and adds to the footprint, and you can't stack this atop anything else for storage unless that collar is supported completely. The temperature control dial is small enough that the temperature numbers sort of run into each other.
When I was a boy, my Dad grilled excellent aged steaks on an old Farberware electric grill, the type with the rotisserie attachment (never used), in the garage in all weathers: the drip pan and the grill were a nuisance to clean, and the bare heating element smoked a lot from drippings. I never developed a taste for charcoal or propane-grilled meat, and this grill is just fine for the kitchen. Now if only I could get good aged beef at a sane price...

Sorry but I cannot recommend this product.
After following all instructions on the user manual here is my review:
1) The performance was not as great as I expected after reading the positive reviews.
2) Don't bother with the smokeless ad. This is not true, there was a lot of smoke in my kitchen, I had to open the doors so the fire alarm wouldn't go off.
3) product cheaply made and only worked twice. The third time everything looked like it was working ie power light was on however in the middle of grilling it stopped working...next thing I knew my food was growing colder every time I took the int temp reading. I then touched the grill plate and it was cold.
I called Sanyo and although it will be covered under warranty they want me to pay for S&H ( which I guess is expected)...I am not going to bother to send product back to Sanyo as at the end of the day everything will cost equivalent to purchasing this again and since it wasn't good to begin with then I'll just count it as a loss.
Get the cast iron grills they are ok. Not great either but ok... I guess nothing beats an outdoor grill.
Customer Review: Only wish I had the Sanyo Grill SOONER

I have Two of these grills. One at my home in Alabama and one at our condominium in Houston, Texas. Now, all of my friends have eaten my great steaks, wonderful grilled catfish fillets and shrimp, pork chops, chicken breasts, asparagus, and much, much more. It is fast, easy, no smoking (and I do not use water in the bottome tray) I just line the drip tray with aluminum and throw it away when I am finished cooking. If one of the chops, fish, etc., are thicker, I simply put a little piece of foil on top to hold the heat in so it cooks evenly, or I wait a few minutes or so before I add the thinner piece on the hot grill. It cooks evenly, and all of my food is juicy and better than our large, expensive outside pit.
The plastic bottom of the grill does not get hot, so I can put it on the counter top or outside on our patio table (using a little extension cord) and everyone has fun watching our meal cook...and they actually help, too.
Don't believe me -- get one for yourself and I promise all your friends will want one, too.
