Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Sanyo HPS-SG2 Indoor Barbeque Grill with 120-Square-Inch Nonstick Cooking SurfaceCustomer Review: A good grill, but not without it's flaws. Summary: 3 Stars
After a few days and a hand full of different dishes prepared I think my opinion of this grill is about as formed as it will ever be. I purchased this grill to replace my Foreman when I moved into a smaller apartment recently, so my perspective on it is mostly based on a comparison between the two grills.
Originally, I was worried about all of the smoke the Foreman created smelling up everything I own in my new place. The Sanyo grill definitely smokes less, but I wouldn't call it smokeless - I still have to put the exhaust fan on over the stove but nothing out of the ordinary. The size is small enough to not feel ridiculous just making one chicken breast, but big enough to make a meal for three or four people.
My one problem with this particular grill and the reason I'm giving it three stars as opposed to four or five is the drip pan you fill up with water before preparing food - it is WAY too shallow. Any food with a high fat content (steaks and burgers especially, which I mostly use this for) will fill the tray up nearly to the brim. The design of the grill makes it a tad awkward to lift the tray out, you have to remove the grill top off of the base to retrieve the drip tray making it easy to spill a mixture of grease and water all over your countertops. This is just another example of a product being designed by someone who has no intention of using it.
All in all it's a good grill. I prefer it to the Foreman and it's worth the money I paid and would purchase it again, but wish they could come up with a better method of grease disposal.
Customer Review: Great for Vegetables Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this grill for vegetables and it has far surpassed my expectations. I have had indoor grills before, and always had a problem with smoke. With this grill, I add a cup of water to the bottom tray, spray the grill with olive oil and coat the veggies with a little oil and Liquid Smoke and let them cook for about ten minutes, flip them and cook another 5-10 minutes. There is absolutely no smoke and the flavor is delicious. My current favorite is grilled eggplant tossed with fresh basil and mozzarella cheese. The next day I add lemon juice and capers to the leftovers and have it as a cold appetizer. I've cooked peppers, onion wedges, zucchini, portobello mushrooms, roma tomatoes (cut side up)... All cook-up perfectly, allowing of course, for different cooking times.
The unit itself is easy to clean and stores vertically or horizontally. The thermometer is a little hard to read, but after a couple of times, I quickly learned the best settings for the different veggies. I probably won't be grilling potatoes (I prefer them roasted), but there are enough veggies that benefit from grilling, so I use the unit at least once a week. This particular size is large enough for two people, although if you're cooking for more than two, you'll probably find the larger size better meets your needs. This size easily grills an entire medium eggplant (sliced) or two or three zucchini (sliced). Very good value for the cost.
Customer Review: Indoor Broiling/Barbecueing Summary: 5 Stars
It's great! So close to the real thing. Just let it heat up for at least 15 minutes. DO NOT put frozen items in it. For quick thaws, Turn upside down your big pots and put the items to be thawed on it in sealed plastic bags and turn them over in 15 or so minutes. As a pot absorbes heat, they also absorbe cold. Beats the Micro Wave. Or depending on the size and quantity, defrost a night or two in the refrigerator.
I dip my steaks in a mixture of salad oil and Kikkoman Soy Sauce, a few minutes before broiling. This seals the juices in and gives you a moisture product. I put mine on the stove under the fan, keeps the Smoke Alarm from going off. DO FILL the bottom with some water. Do not leave the kitcen when using this or any similar item. Unplug from the wall FIRST, then grill....IF COOL. Otherwise the prong is hot.
All, except for the heating unit can go in the dishwasher. Broling unit cleans easily with the plug end up NEVER SUBMURGE, with hot water, liquid dish soap and and a brush. Dry with paper towel. I store mine in the oven as I bake and etc. in a Convection Toaster Oven. I live alone, so cook for one (usually)
Iv'e been in the restaurant business fo over 20 years and this is the closet I've come in finding a in-house broiler. Sure keeps me from running in and out to a out door Barbecue.
Read the book. I truly recommend this product as well as Amazon for finding whit I want.
Customer Review: The Best Indoor Electric Grill Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this product after doing lot of research in the internet and comparing many products. I checked out all the Foreman Grills but found this one better. This is best value for money. I am a student and it fits my budget, storage and saves cooking time. I am using it for the past 1.5 months and I am very satisfied with it and will recommend it to others. I always wondered if I could grill myslef like the restaurant and this grill made everything so simple and I am very pleased that I bought it.
As advertised this doesn't cause smoke, put water in the tray below and it is smoke free, there will be no burning or smoke. I tried Grilled Salmon, Grilled chicken and Chicken kabob and everything comes out soft, juicy and delicious like an outdoor grill. It gives perfect grill marks and cooks really fast. I have seen some comments like it's slow, but I found it to be really fast. So time your grill properly else it will be hard :).
This grill is smaller than the other Sanyo grill (HPS-SG3 200) so easy to store in the kitchen and easy to clean in the kitchen sink. So far all my grills have come out like restaurant. The size is good enough for 3 people and as it cooks fast you can cool for more in no time.
I feel this will be an even better product if they can provide a cover. I used my oven tray as a cover ...
Buy it and you will enjoy grilling indoor.
Customer Review: Good but not great Summary: 4 Stars
Sanyo HPS-SG2 Indoor Barbeque Grill with 120-Square-Inch Nonstick Cooking Surface
Pros: Good size. Works pretty well. Cools down very quickly when temperature lowered or unit turned off. Relatively easy to clean. None of the parts that you touch get hot. Easy to use.
Cons: Temperature adjustment sucks. The temperature range from 250 to 450 is squeezed into a 3/4" space on the knob. It's impossible to be accurate. The base is plastic and there are no rubber feet, so it slides along the countertop like it's on ice. It would be very easy to pull it off the counter just trying to remove the power cord. Can't sit on the stovetop because it's got four feet and it's impossible to get it to sit level on the elements. Not completely smoke free (not a shock). Not barbecue flavor; just a grill (also not a shock). Because it doesn't have a lid like a barbecue, it cooks only on direct heat (like a frying pan); so, it you're cooking something thick (chicken breast or steak) it's unlikely that the inside will be done at the same time that the outside is charred. You can turn the heat down once the outside gets charred but then it takes forever. It's better for souvlaki or strip steaks.
