Customer Review: Great quesadillas, cheap latch!
Summary: 3 Stars

I got the Santa Fe Quesadilla Maker as a wedding shower gift, and I've been using it for two days now. I find it easy to use, and easy to clean...just wipe it with a paper towel and everything that oozed out during cooking comes right off.

On our first night using it, I just made standard cheese quesadillas. The following morning, I made breakfast quesadillas with scrambled eggs and cheese. Then I tried a peanut butter and jelly quesadilla for lunch (won't be making that one again!).

This morning, I made another breakfast quesadilla...same as yesterday morning. After about 1.5 mins of cooking, I heard a "POP" sound from the quesadilla maker. I went over to investigate, but everything looked fine. When it was done cooking, I slid the quesadilla onto a plate and began wiping the machine down with a paper towel. As I wiped around the front edge, I noticed a thin red strip of plastic in the collection trough. It was the latch. I'm sure that's the "POP" sound that I had heard while the quesadilla was cooking, and I plan to contact the manufacturer. Too bad, because it was my new favorite toy!

Customer Review: It sounds like a good idea. It's not.

We were given this quesadilla maker as a gift. Within a few months, we'd given it away.

It's messy. Even if it's "easy to clean" (and it is nonstick so that's not too much of a pain), any drooling cheese can land on your kitchen counter. And it will, because it isn't easy to estimate how much to use. Presto: instant kitchen mess. An ordinary skillet doesn't have that problem.

The quesadilla maker isn't any faster than using the stove, either. It certainly takes up more real estate in the kitchen. Unless you make quesadillas a lot (I can imagine college kids doing so, for example), you'll have to drag it off a shelf every time... and the mess certainly dissuaded me from doing so.

Do you really need another single-purpose item?

All its weaknesses might be forgivable if the product made wonderful food. It doesn't. This is definitely optimized for the pre-shredded yellow cheese buyers. If you want to use monterrey jack or aged cheddar, the results are uneven and the tortillas become hard.

I'm glad I didn't spend my own money on this. It's extremely disappointing.

Customer Review: This Quesadilla Maker is AWESOME!!

Don't laugh everyone, but I found this quesadilla maker brand new in a box recently at the Salvation Army Thrift store for $3.00. My daughter was always telling me how whenever she went to a Mexican restaurant that it always cost her and her friends around $8.00 to buy a quesadilla as an appetizer with their meals. We have used the Santa Fe Quesadilla Maker non-stop ever since we bought it and have come up with so many original and fun recipes and have enjoyed it so much. We did find by trial and error though that you can not load down the tortilla shells too much with the ingredients or is a little difficult to shut and clamp the lid down. I don't understand why anyone would need to spray "pam" on the unit...nothing sticks to it and is easily cleaned out with a paper towel or clean washcloth. Don't submerge it in water, ever!!! Who knows, someday I might just make a grilled cheese sandwich in it just for fun...it's a whole lot better than the George Foreman grill! I recommened this unit to anyone who loves quesadillas and would make a great Christmas present!

Customer Review: This is just OK...

I was a little disappointed. I had delusions of grandeur that this device would create beautiful quesadillas that tasted great with a minimum of fuss and muss. Well, the quesadillas do taste great (but what's not to like about tortillas and cheese); however, I've yet to perfect the process without spilling melted cheese everywhere. Clean-up is relatively easy --- the non-stick surface cleans up well with a dry paper towel; but, clean-up would be even easier if you simply use a non-stick skillet instead. Is this device a cool novelty? Yes. Will it ultimately take up precious cabinet space and gather dust? Probably, but yet to be determined. My son loves it because he can help me make him his quesadilla, so I'm appreciative of this device's novelty. And I would admit that the quesadillas from this machine do come out quite nicely. All in all, I'm not unhappy with my purchase, but it didn't measure up to my high expectations. BTW, I recommend erring on using larger size tortillas --- you can fill it with more stuff and you have less spillage.

Customer Review: Mediocre

This works... sort of. As another reviewer mentioned, there isn't enough room in the pockets. If you want to put anything other than cheese in your quesadilla (such as chicken), you probably won't be able to close the lid all the way. I suppose you might be able to get it closed if you put nothing but cheese inside, but that'd be boring. Even then, the design of this appliance means that you can't put very much cheese in. This thing suishes your quesadillas so flat that even a modestly filled quesadilla will have about half of it's filling squished out the side.

Another problem, the workmanship of this thing is so-so. On mine, the "ready" light was burnt out when I got it.

This isn't useless. I will keep this machine, and wil use it when I want a very quick quesadilla. When I want good, reasonably filled quesadillas, however, I'll cook them in a frying pan with a small amount of oil. They turn out great that way.

UPDATE: I take it back. This thing finally got so annoying to use that I returned it.
