Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Santa Fe Quesadilla Maker

Customer Review: fun, but somewhat impractical gadget
Summary: 3 Stars

making quesadillas certainly isn't rocket science, but this is definitely useful for people who don't do a lot of cooking or just really like quesadillas. there are a few things to watch out for:

the cord is REALLY short (like less than 2 feet, and the manufacturer recommends AGAINST using extension cords) and the maker is relatively big, so on some crowded counters, trying to find a place to put this can be tough

the maker itself gets pretty hot, and there's only a small rubber spot on the lid to handle it by...and along with the cord issue, you have to be really careful that the lid doesn't touch anything when you open the maker because it will burn/melt whatever it touches

i had thought from the picture that the maker cuts the quesadillas...it doesn't, it just makes a little indentation that you have to cut yourself

it's kinda hard to get the quesadillas out of the maker...i was using smaller tortillas (10") than recommended, so maybe that was a factor

clean-up can get tricky, so be sure to start wiping down while the maker is still warm

all that said, again, it's a fun gadget and comes with some interesting recipes. but hardcore quesadilla lovers might prefer the old fashioned way of making them...on the stove

Customer Review: Get a nonstick skillet instead
Summary: 1 Stars

The main reason I bought this gadget -- reluctantly, too, because of a shortage of storage space -- was that I have a little trouble turning quesadillas over in a skillet without a couple of ingredients flying out. But the Santa Fe was such a disappointment that I immediately returned it. First, it requires that you use only 10-inch tortillas. None that I've found are exactly this size. The tortillas came out almost raw tasting in the middle and dry and hard around the edges. There are also exact requirements for amounts of cheese and other ingredients. So you have to measure. I guesstimated, and a lot of cheese oozed out and into the drip tray. The best I can say is that it was easy to clean. But I have happily gone back to my nonstick skillet, which heats up just as quickly on the electric stove and produces much tastier quesadillas, browned exactly right, more quickly than in the appliance. To ease flipping, just spend 50 cents each on two nonstick, double-size spatulas at Walmart.BTW, I used PAM spray on both skillet and Santa Fe, but somehow the skillet ones tasted better, and my husband was the first to say so. As another reviewer said, the bright red color is great. And the stand-up storage feature is nice, too. But for good food, I prefer a skillet.

Customer Review: Cheese on matzo. That's what it tastes like.
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought this for ten bucks used from a friend and am I ever glad I didn't pay any more. I've been looking at these on Amazon for a while and was never brave enough to spend the money to add another potential space-waster to my kitchen, but I really love to make quesadillas. Unfortunately, I like to put lots of stuff in them - the very stuff the manufacturer mentions; grilled veg, chicken. Sure, you can put these items in, but only if they're 1/4" thick. The 6 sections are very shallow and allow very little filling. What you can force into it will just squeeze out the ends. Then, of course, the pointy end of each section will have at least 1" worth of hard tortilla with no filling at all, since it's all squeezed back to the wide end by the dividing ribs. Just look at the picture of the product! That's a 1/2" thick quesadilla! And no matter how short a time you leave the quesadilla in you'll still get crunchy, hard tortillas, not the tender, crispiness you're hoping for! I'm so disappointed. You're just better off using a frying pan.

*update* I had been using the high-carb tortillas - use the regular old flour tortillas and the texture is MUCH better. I'm not changing my rating, though, because I still wish I could put more stuff in them!

Customer Review: OLD MODEL-Difficult to Clean-NOT as PICTURED--SF Quesadilla Maker
Summary: 1 Stars

Ordered based on Picture on Amazon web site, which shows Updated Model that has an Easy Clean 1-inch drip tray surrounding heating plates. What I received was the Design Defective "Old Original Model" with a 1/8th-inch drip tray access, which is impossible to clean even when using a tooth pick. The Original Model was DEFECTIVE by Design with its oversized heating plates and inadequate drip tray access for cleaning which can be a serious Health Hazard. Frequent problems with filling bubbling out of machine because 1/8th-inch drip tray ridge access was unable to accommodate excess filling that oozes out during heating/cooking process. Old Model with Blender often can be purchased elsewhere for under Twenty Combined; and by itself frequently on sale for Twelve or Less. There is a very good reason that the OLD MODEL is sold so CHEAP, IT IS DEFECTIVE BY DESIGN. I have now returned the old model that was shipped by Amazon. I will buy one from my local Bull's Eye Logo store which carries the Newer Model, as I have seen it there on my many shopping trips and can be assured that I am receiving the Easy Clean Newer Model. Insist on the Newer Model with the "Easy Clean 1-inch Drip Tray" when purchasing and you will not be disappointed.

Customer Review: Fun and Fabulous!
Summary: 5 Stars

I simply love this gadget. When I first saw it in a local store, I thought it looked interesting but I didn't think I could really make use of it enough to warrant the purchase. A few days later, I decided that I reallty wanted to buy it. After all, it was on sale in that store and I figured it was worth a try. When I went back to the store, they were totally sold out. This was the week before Christmas. Then, I checked on Amazon.com and sure enough it was here and for the same price. I ordered it and received it very quickly. I have used it several times and tried it with different fillings each time. My kids really enjoyed each quesadilla. A previous review mentioned how truly versatile this appliance could be with a bit of imagination and I truly agree. You could really do so much with it. My favorite quesadilla so far has been filled with canned apples, brown sugar and cinnamon. Then, after cooking, I poured glaze on top and sprinkled it with a dusting of cinnamon and sugar. It looked and tasted wonderful. Ice cream on top might be good for those of you who enjoy that. Me, I just liked it the way it was. I am very happy with this purchase and I highly recommend it to anyone who like to create interesting meals.
