Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Sango Nova Brown 16-Piece Dinnerware Set, Service for 4Customer Review: Reviewers saved me money! Summary: 3 Stars
I happened to spot 4 large beautiful coffee cups Nova Brown yesterday in a thrift shop (Good Will). I was so thrilled to find mugs compatible with my dishes, Ben Seigel Country Cabin by Mikasa because the cups made for my pattern are small older style, these looked good quality and perfect match for my dishes. Then I snapped up 4 wonderful size cereal bowls but passed on a stack of salad plates, some were chipped and I like my Mikasa ones. Chip revealed clay may be terra cotta which is too dry and porous for micro. Learned the hard way with Mexican pottery and vintage Frankoma. There was no "Microwave Safe" stamped on the bottoms so assumed they are vintage. I later Googled Replacements hoping to find more info, years made and pieces and was happy to learn these are not discontinued but postage is high there. The only dishwasher here is me.
The only place online I found more was Macy's and wanted the casserole and au gratin. No big investment so far, my odd pieces of Nova were just 50c each, but there were no dinner plates. Now I know why, first to go huh.
Oh oh, first morning I reheated a cup of coffee one minute and cup was so hot by the time it cooled enough to handle it the coffee was luke warm. Bad sign. Then I checked Amazon and found these many reviews. Thank you for the warnings! I still love the looks of them and yes, each is a bit different which gives them a hand made look. There is a tiny flea bite chip on the rim of one bowl but could live with that, great size and form. Heated some beans and ham tonight and wow used a heating pad to take the bowl out, didn't break but surprised it didn't after 2 minutes. Food stayed warm a long time. The only dishes I've ever seen get so hot in the micro are ironstone, these must have some iron content in the clay, ironstone does hold heat well, not supposed to nuke those either but I do for soups. Never had any break or arcing.
Funny, I found the Mikasa dinner plates last year at GW thrift too for $1 each not knowing what I had, just loved the colors and design, high rims, no spills. Have quite an investment in filling out pieces discontinued on those, but cups too small and casseroles are designer prices, retro. I didn't want another even more hard to find pattern. Now I see these are easy to find but in sets(already in the thrifts at 50c apiece ha ha) but maybe not so easy to keep. And dishes don't come in open stock. I live alone at 70 yrs old so don't need a whole set, just so tempted by the beauty of the other pieces but I live off the microwave too.
I guess I'll just enjoy cold things in these great bowls and stick with my long time Corning casseroles, the old 1970's cornflower as corny as they look, they could never improve on those, so thanks for the savings folks. Maybe they just had a bad year since others had no problems, especially the Blue. Guess I'll use the mugs too with my dishes - great color match, but no nuking. They do feel comfortable and such nice glazes to sip from when cooled. It is odd they don't stamp them micro safe, just the pattern name and Sango on mine, which sure helped ID them. I don't believe Sango not responding to your losses. Really bad PR!
I give them a 3 star for the heat factor since I've only had them a day but would give 5* for aesthetics. Don't they feel smooth and wonderful to handle room temp? Salads or cold serials yes, maybe get some ice creams at Macy's if not on Amazon.
