Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Salton YM9 1-Quart Yogurt Maker

Customer Review: Simply the best - I run 3 of these at a time
Summary: 5 Stars

My mother always made yogurt and cultured it wrapped in a blanket the 'old world' way...seemed scary to me but as I became a parent and saw the laundry list of ingredients on pre-made yogurt, I decided to do it myself...just with a little more help than a blanket. I bought 3 of these from Amazon In October 2007(with another item during a 4-for-3 sale) thinking I would give them to my 2 sisters and one for me...I made my first batch...whoa...so easy, so delicious, no preservatives. It was gone instantly. Well, perhaps I should use 2 machines, and make more..."Gone in 60 Seconds." So now I use 3 Salton's at once...my family (and teen) love it.

I recently purchased a Jack LaLanne Juicer and did not want to simply discard all the fruit pulp and fiber. It works wonderfully if you just stir the fruit pulp into plain fresh homemade yogurt. The wonder of it is that it will re-hydrate by the whey (which is VERY EXPENSIVE to purchase from a health food store for it's pure protein), so why pour it down the drain? A touch of honey and some walnuts...heaven. Better than ice cream! I use fat free milk and a 1/8 cup of dry milk per quart of yogurt (per machine). I also use a candy thermometer as others have noted to monitor heating and cooling temperature.

Customer Review: A great product at a great price.

I am very happy with my new yogurt maker! It makes smooth, creamy delicious yogurt.

It takes about an hour's prep time. You scald a quart of milk on the stove, then cool to 100-110 degrees (candy thermometer needed, not included). While the milk is cooling, pre-heat the yogurt maker. Then you mix in your starter (1/2 cup yogurt either store-bought or reserved from prior batch). Then dump it all into the yogurt maker and leave it alone for 4-9 hours. 4 hours gives you runny mild yogurt, 9+ gives you very tart stiff yogurt. I usually go for 6-7 hours: hat results in a firm and tangy yogurt. Yummy!

Then refrigerate and enjoy! I usually use organic skim milk. I store the yogurt plain, then add flavorings if desired when it's time to eat.

The price of a gallon of organic milk is about the same as a quart of organic yogurt. Since I eat about 2 quarts of yogurt a week, I'm saving over $3.00 a week. In about 5 weeks, the yogurt maker will have paid for itself, and I'll save about $150 in a year.

Con: It's a pain to clean up the saucepan `cause the milk sticks. The yogurt maker has a dial to remind you what time the yogurt will be done, but it's not a real timer.

Overall, I rate it an A-

Customer Review: Wow - yogurt is better
Summary: 5 Stars

I received my SALTON YM-9 as a gift.

The YM9 is good - makes yogurt in about 9 hours (more or less) and allows the user to make it in a glass quart jar(not included). It is very easy to make - 5 minutes prep then into the warm chamber to make the yogurt. I purchased Euro Cuisine Yogurt Starter (avail at Amazon) but you can use plain yogurt as a culture.

Add some fruit jam into the cups(about a tablespoon) before or after and you have berries and cream tasting snack.
Add some lemon pie filling and you have a lemon and cream dessert.

I used the YM9 to make yogurt and it is far better than store yogurt. Taste like milk - with a pudding consistancy.
I used a tart plum jam as sweetener and it is delicious.

I highly recommend making yogurt at home, this was my first time to make - and I was surprised how easy it is.
Daily consumption of calcium is very important, if we do not eat enough of this mineral throughout the day, our bodies can make an emergency withdrawal from the bones - thus weakening the bones.
For more info about Calcium see this US Government website: ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/calcium/

I also recommend the YM9 -- or any yogurt maker that meets your needs.

Customer Review: Love it
Summary: 5 Stars

I make about 5 - 6 quarts of yogurt with this machine every week. My kids love them. My favorite is to mix with honey and frozen mixed berries. My kids love yogurt with real mapple syrup and granola or crushed M&Ms. Occasionally, I would add Nesquick and a bit of sugar and it becomes quilt-free chocolate mousse. My kids love it (so do I!). We have yogurt for breakfast almost every morning, that's why I have to keep making them.

I just use store-bought organic yogurt as starter, pour in cold ultra-pasturized orgnaic milk, mix it, let it sit for 12 hrs, and then it is done. I tried many different ways according to directions in the mannual or other books, but this is the easiest and it always work! I usually smell it and make sure it has a nice smell before I put it in the fridge to set. Occasionally (1 out of 20) I would get a bad result, perhaps because I did not clean the container or utensil properly. My kids like a thicker consistency so, after the yogurt is set, I always drain it with a cheese cloth for a little while. It works great. I would get a new 8oz yogurt every two weeks just to get fresh new germs. Each commercial brand has different germs in their yogurt and our favorite is "Brown Cow." Good luck with your yogurt adventure.

Customer Review: Fool proof machine even for Novices
Summary: 5 Stars

I just bought this machine and I have never had any experience making yogurts or using a yogurt making machine before and I was able to easily make a whole milk, probiotic yogurt using this machine. The starter culture which I had ordered with the machine was backordered, but I was so excited to try the equipment I just took a few table spoons of yogurt from the probiotic, organic yogurt which I had already bought and simply applied some of the various quick start tips which I had read here from the various users. I was able to start using the machine mere minutes after I got it. After 8 hours, the yogurt came out ultra thick and creamy without being tart, just the way I like it! The yogurt was so good, it could probably rival my favorite brand which I used to eat daily in Germany and which I had sorely missed. I also replaced the inner plastic tub with a 1-Qt mason jar and found this tip to be a very practical move.

I use yogurt a lot but had no idea making it was so easy! I am have made 2 more batches since then, and they both turned out perfect. This appliance will be a staple in my kitchen and I will probably make 3 or 4 batches of yogurt with it every week - that's how fast I use up the stuff.
