Customer Review: A gimmick that's not worth the money

In terms of ability to weigh items accurately, this scale is reasonable - no better or worse than any other I've used. In terms of feature-set, though, it is quite appalling. The scale switches itself off after a ludicrously short time, meaning that unless you have all of your ingredients prepared ahead of time, you'll find that halfway through measuring, the unit has switched off (losing the weight you were halfway through measuring). If you can't remember what the weight was then you're stuck with a problem.
Also, the "aquatronic" portion of the scale, ie. its ability to measure fluid ounces and milliliters, is a complete and utter gimmick. Grams and milliliters are identical; ditto ounces and fluid ounces. The extra button is only there to fool the naive into thinking the scale is doing something special. The gimmick also requires a poorly made spiral-bound notebook that you'll immediately lose, which tells you how to convert from a handful of ingredients to measure by weight.
All in all, this scale is completely unworthy of its pricetag.

Salter Housewares Aquatronic Baker's Dream Electronic Kitchen scale has a special design which allows for weighing dry or liquid ingredients in both pounds and kilos. Perfect in the kitchen, it comes with a conversion chart for measuring volume measurements to fluid ounces. E.g.: 1 Cup of water= 8 fl oz, 1cup of flour = 5oz. This model weighs precise 1/4 ounce increments up to 11-pounds or 175 fl oz. All surfaces are resistant to staining or flavor carry-over and has an extra large angled 0.6" LCD display. With the add and weigh feature, 10 year guarantee and recipe booklet that is included , it's no wonder this scale is one of the best selling in the marketplace.Aquatronic is the first kitchen scale to weigh both liquid and dry ingredients in both metric and imperial. By using weight instead of the traditional cup/teaspoon measurements, the scale eliminates the need for multiple measuring cups and increases recipe accuracy. To make, for example, the dressing for potato salad, a bowl is placed on the scale, the on button is pushed, and then the MG/FL OZ button pushed. Mayonnaise is spooned into the bowl until 8 fluid ounces (recipes vary) is reached; the on button is pushed to reset, then 2 fluid ounces of vinegar is added. By pushing the KG/LB button, 4 ounces of chopped celery can be added into the same bowl, and so on. No other measuring devices are needed.
Like all of Salter?s electronic kitchen scales, this one features a high precision strain-gauge weight sensing system, low battery indicator, add-and-weigh capability, and an auto zero function. Both automatic and manual shut-off are featured. The Aquatronic measures amounts weighing up to 11 pounds (175 fluid ounces; 5 kg) in 1/4-ounce (5 g) increments. Slim in profile, the scale measures 8-1/2 by 7 by 1-1/2 inches with a weighing platform of 5 by 6-3/4 inches. Included is a handy stand-up conversion chart for various foods (different kinds of flour, cornmeal, mayonnaise, ketchup, etc.) that gives standard cup measures and their equivalent measure in ounces or fluid ounces. For example, 1/4 cup of mayonnaise equals 2 fluid ounces; 1 cup of bread flour equals 5 ounces.
