Not sure what people expect for less than three bucks, but this magnifying glass does the job. The three inch glass does magnify small print to an easily read level - very easily. The handle is plastic and is `grooved' but it is simply a minor raised line. It is perfectly adequate for occasional use. I bought this for one reason - a gift. I went SCUBA diving in Belize and the Dive Master (who was not rich) had lost his magnifying glass which he used to show small sea creatures (snapping shrimp, seahorses, flamingo tongues, fan crabs, etc.) He was SO good at identifying things I would never see, it was a no-brainer to send this to him as a small `thank you' (not to mention the well earned tip).
Also, the irony is not lost on me that as baby-boomers, electronic devices are getting smaller and smaller. You wouldn't use this necessarily on one of those, but it is a good item to have on the side when those instructions are so small. Ever try to read the instructions on a simple bottle of shampoo? This magnifying glass is a little secret that is simply handy to have around.

I bought this magnifying glass fully expecting that it would not be what it purported to be - but it's even worse than I imagined.
On-line sellers of magnifying glasses either do not know or do not care what the power rating (for example, 5X) means. A 5X glass has to be held within a couple of inches of the material, and it provides a huge amount of magnification. And a 5X glass is both heavy and thick - and the larger the diameter, the heavier the glass. A 3 inch 5X glass - which is how this is advertised - might weigh close to a pound!
So, I did not really expect 5X. 3X maybe.
Not a chance. This worthless piece of ... uh ... glass is almost flat: at most it is a 1.5X. And it's going back.

Nothing like the image. Bought this as part of a deal with jewelers loops. Really bad workmanship. Real Glass lense but scratched in all three magnifiers,
not worth 1cent. Plastic frame and unfinished sheet metal for the jewelers loop had such sharp edges on it I cut my thumb trying to open one of them!
I would strongly recomend not purchasing these for yourself or children. Oh and it's not the magnification advertized either. from the set of three I bought...
5X is more like 2x the 10x is right and so is the 20X but the 30x is just a 5x! cheat! foul! lies! badly made rip off!

I would return it except I am so mad at the supplier that I do not want to have anything to do with them

I THOUGHT BUYING A 5X MAGNIFYING GLASS WAS BETTER IDEA THAN BUYING A 2X OR A 3X GLASS. I WAS WRONG. THE 5X, AT LEAST THIS ONE DOES NOT WORK AS WELL AS A 2X OR 3X. YOU HAVE TO GET ALOT CLOSER TO THE SUBJECT FOR ANY CLARITY AND THE CLOSER YOU GET THE LESS MAGNIFICATION YOU GET. PS, THE 2X AND 3X ENDS-UP GIVING YOU MORE MAGNIFICATION WITH CLARITY. I TOSSED MY 5X INTO THE GARBAGE. THAT'S HOW USELESS IT WAS. NOT WORTH RETURNING.
